The Cougars opened another season, this time in frigid Burlington, Iowa. It was freezing out side. Five of the nine runs in the game were scored in the first inning. The main problem for the cougars was the sevneth inning, they would give up three runs but could've givin up more.

The first part of the first inning was fun to see, from a Cougars perspective. With one out, Mike Massaro walked. Christian Vitters then walked also. One out later, Greg Dowling then doubled down the right field line to score both runners. Yes, the Cougars scored two runs in the first inning, only one problem they would give up three in the next half inning. Scott Deal started for the Cougars, he would go four innings, throwing 65 pitches.

Deal walked Jarrod Dyson to lead off the inning. Chris McConnell then doubled to the left field wall to get Dyson to third. Kurt Mertins then tripled to right center to score both Dyson and McConnell. Marc Maddox hit a fly to right to allow Mertins to tag up and score. Deal then would be able to get Jase Turner to strike out. Jose Dickerson singled to center, then he would steal second. Michael Thompson singled to short, to get Dickerson to third. Brady Everett would then fly to center to end the inning.

Thankfully things then quieted down a little bit, for the next two innings. Haas Prat would get a two out double in the third, but that would be the only Cougar hit. The infield did try a circus double play. Second baseman Isaac Omura got to a grounder behind second. He flipped it behind his back to shortstop Christian Vitters, and if the throw to first wasnt way high they mightve gotten the runner.

In the fourth inning, Jacob Smith led off the inning with a double down the left field line. A wild pitch would move him to third. One out later, Omura hit a sacrifice fly to left to allow Smith to score to tie up the game. Scott Deal gave up a couple of hits in the fourth. With one out, Dickerson blooped a single to center. Everett then singled to cetnter. A groundout later, which moved the runners along. Dyson then struck out to end the inning.

The Cougars offense didnt really get going the rest of the game, they had a couple of opportunities but not much offense. In the fifth inning, Jermaine Mitchell led it off with a single to right. A groundout and two strikeouts later the inning would be over. In the eighth inning, Mike Massaro led off with a walk. A strikeout and a double play. The ninth inning was the only time the Cougars had a real chance. With one out. Smith and Matt Sulentic both walked. Omura would then reach on a catchers interference call to load the bases. Michael Affronti then struck out. Jermain Mitchell worked the count but would then strike out to end the game.

The seventh inning for the Bees wasnt fun to watch. With one out, O.D. Gonzalez singled to right. Dyson then singled to right. The Bees tried a double steal, Gonzalez would be picked off going towards third by the pitcher. McConnell walked. Mertins then singled off of the pitcher to load the bases. Maddox would single to right to score both Dyson and McConnell. The Cougars then brought in a new pitcher. Turner walked, and would be pitch run for y Scott Lucas. With the bases loaded Brenden Dewing walked Dickerson to allow Mertins to score.

Brenden Dewing did come back in the eighth inning and strike out the side, two of them called. The Cougars offense looked good, even though they are very left handed. The bats just froze I guess.

A-616, maybe 200 there, 4 Cougar fans!!!

Random B.S.-The hotdogs here are only slighly better than the Elfstrom Stadium Death Dogs, the dogs are about the same, the buns taste diffrent though, so I rate them slightly better, not by much though. I do like the two beers for four dollars, can tonight though.....It was maybe 37-38 degress at game time, it had to be in the teens wind chill at the end of the game, I was freezing, under about six or seven layers.

Tomorrows Game
at Burlington 7 pm
Joe Piekarz vs Everett Teaford

Alumni-Kevin Melillo sort of won the game tonight for Sacramento, tied at 7 bottom 9. bases loaded two outs, I believe. He walked with a full count to bring home the winning run.
