Tonight we got back on track with a ten inning win. This was the second time in three games that the Cougars would play ten innings against the Kernels. Both times we won, our only two wins this year. Please tell me it wont be like this all year.
The starting pitchers were great tonight, Rafael Rodriguez starter for the Kernels and pitched very well. He only went five innings, but he struck out eight, and only gave up one run. The Cougars wouldnt get their first hit untill the third, with two outs. He did walk three hitters, two of which were in the first inning.
Derek Tharpe started for the Cougars and also went five innings. He gave up four hits and two runs. Only one of those runs were earned. Tharpe walked one and struck out six.
The first run of the game was in the fifth with two outs. Gregorio Petit walked. Nicholas Blasi then doubled to center to score Petit.
Cedar Rapids counterd that with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Jordan Renz led off by reaching on an error by third baseman Myron Leslie. Billy Boyer then hit a shot to left for a two run homer. Tommy Duenas grounded one to first, Tommy Everidge tried to flip it to the pitcher and overthrew the him for an error. Duenas would end up on second. That was all with no outs. Tharpe settled down and struck out Richard Giannotti. Nate Sutton and Freddy Sandoval both grounded out to second, the last one to end the inning.
The Cougars tied the game in the seventh. With one out Chris Tritle walked. Petit looped one down the right field line for a double. This got Tritle to third. Blasi was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Kevin Melillo then was hit by a pitch to force home Tritle. Unfortunatly Leslie grounded into an inning ending double play.
Tommy Everidge led off the tenth witha single to center. Raul Padron then doubled into the left field gap to drive home Everidge to give the Cougars the lead.
The Cougars would get chances to score runs throughout the game but again just couldnt capitalize on the opportunities they got. In the first inning, Blasi led off the game with a walk. One out later, Leslie walked. Everidge then grounded into an inning ending double play.
In the third inning with one out, Melillo tripled to center, the centerfielder fell down after he got to the ball which allowed him to get to third. Leslie then struck out to end the inning.
Leslie singled to right to lead off the sixth inning. Everidge then reached on a fielder's choice, Leslie was out at second. Padron singled to center. Wes Long then grounded into an inning ending double play.
Padron doubled to center with one out in the eighth inning. Long then reached on a fielder's choice, what Padron was doing going to third, ona ball back to the mound I dont know. He was toast at third. Long went to second on a balk. Kory Wayment then struck out looking to end the inning.
The Cougars bullpen did a nice job today. Connor Robertson went two innings, with one walk. He struck out two. Robert Semerano then went two innings, and gave up a hit, but struck out three. Scott Drucker came in to try to get the save. He pitched a perfect ninth with two strike outs.
Nicholas Blasi was on base four times today, as he had two walks and a double. Plus he reached on an error. Padron had four hits, with two doubles and a run batted in.
