The Cougars would score the winning run of the game in the tenth inning. That would be the only run of the game. The Cougars beat the Burlington Bees 1-0 in game one of the double header.
The inning started off with Jonathan Johnston walked. Matt Ray then doubled to right to get Johnston to third. Bee pitcher Yensi Lopez walked intentionally to load the bases. Greg Dowling then poped up a foul ball back to the catcher. Jake Smith would then walked to bring home Johnston to end the game.
The Cougars would actually have a few chances throughout the game to score some runs. In the first inning, Brown singled to short with two outs. Dowling then singled to right. Smith would end the inning with a force out. In the third inning, with one out, Johnston would be hit by a pitch, then steal second. Matt Ray then struck out, and Brown grounded out to end the inning.
Christian Vitters singled to center with one out, then stole second, as Michael Richard struck out looking. Johnston walked. First and second with two outs, Ray would strike out. In the seventh inning, Todd Johnson singled to short to lead things off. Michael Lissman would then bunt him over to second. Christian Vitter got his job done and moved Johnson to third. Michael Richard wasnt able to get Johnson in, he would ground back to the pitcher to end the inning.
In the eighth inning, Johnston led off with a walk, Ray would foul off a bunt to strike out for the first out. Johnston stole second, then Brown struck out. Dowling would ground out to end the inning. With two outs in the ninth, Michael Lissman doubled to center. Christian Vitters then got in the way of a pitch. Michael Richard would reach on a fielder's choice, with Lissman being out at third to end the inning.
Jonathan Johnston got on base three out of the four times he came up to bat. He walked three times and was hit by a pitch. Jonathan scored once and stole two bases.
Scott Hodsdon made his first start for the Cougars. He would last into the fourth inning, giving up four hits and no runs. In the first inning he escaped some trouble. Adrian Ortiz led off with a single to short, he would get to second on an errant throw by shortstop Michael Richard. Wilson Tucker then walked. David Lough singled to left to load the bases with nobody out. Hodsdon then struck out Mike Moustakas and Jason Taylor both struck out looking. Clint Robinson popped out to first to end the inning.
Lough singled to center with two outs in the third inning, followed by a Moustakas single to right. Hodsdon popped foul to first to end the inning.
With two outs in the fourth, Cougars reliever Brad Hertzler came in for his second hitter, he walked Todd Balduf. THen hit Zach Evangelho. Hertzler would be able to get Ortiz to ground out to end the inning. With one out in the fifth Lough would walk. One out later, Taylor singled to right to get Lough to third. Robinson grounded out to second to end the inning.
The Cougars bullpen did great. Chris Farley and Scott Moore would combine for three perfect innings, Farley struck out two hitters.
