The Burlington Bees out played the Cougars tonight in their victory at Elfstrom Stadium by a score of 6-3.
The Bees scored first in the second inning. Kiel Thibault singled to right. Carlos Arroyo then reached on a fielder's choice, with Thibault out at second. Jeremy Jirschele then tripled to right center to score Arroyo. Miguel Vega would then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Jirschele.
Burlington scored twice more in the third inning. With one out Josh Johnson walked. Valentino Arce then reached on a bouncer to third that Jeff Baisley tried to bare hand and couldn't make the play. Chris McConnell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Thibault then blooped one in front of the center fielder Mike Massaro. Massaro dove and almost got it. Johson would score. Arroyo then grounded one to first. The first baseman Raul Padron almost tried to go to second to get the force. Thankfully he threw it to first, where the pitcher Trey Shields was covering. Arroyo almost beat Shields to the bag. Arce scored on the play. Jirschele would then strike out looking to end the inning.
Miguel Vega hit a leadoff homer in the fourth inning off of the batter's eye in centerfield. For a momemt there the replacement umps forgot the ground rules and only called it a ground rule double, but finally they got it right.
The Cougars put up a run in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer to right field for Frank Martinez. Burlington came right back the next half inning to get the run back. With one out, McConnell doubled down the left field line. One out later, Arroyo singled to right center to score McConnell.
Kane County did put up two runs in the eighth inning. Martinez led off by reaching on a grounder to third. The play was that he beat the throw to first, plus the throw was way over the head of the first baseman. Which led to Martinez getting to second on the error. Baisley then walked. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position. Padron walked to load the bases. Bieker grounded out to third for the first out. On the play Martinez scored. Another wild pitch, this time it would bring home Baisley. One out later, Anthony Recker walked. The Bees then made a pitching change. Justin Sellers would ground out to end the inning.
The Cougars had their chances to score runs in the game. In the second inning with two outs, Bieker was hit by a pitch. Wes Long then doubled down the left field line, Bieker went to third. Recker popped out to short to end the inning. In the fifth inning, with one out. Mike Massaro singled to short. One out later, Martinez walked. Baisley then popped out to right to end the inning. Raul Padron led off the sixth inning with a single to center. Two line outs to center and a strike out later the inning was over.
Trey Shields started for the second time for the Cougars. He got out of the first inning with out any problems, then got into trouble the rest of the way. He would make it through five innings giving up seven hits and six runs. He walked one and struck out two. The bullpen again pitch outstanding. Brad Davis pitched two perfect innings. Steven Sharpe also pitched two perfect innings. in the seventh inning shortstop Sellers made an outstanding play, just getting to a ball way behind second base. He twirled around and fired to first to get the hitter out.
Rayner Oliveros started for the Bees and pitched well. He went seven, giving up four hits and one runs. His main problem was the three walks. Eliszer Garcia pitched two third of an inning. He had two wild pitches and three walks. Calvin Hayes pitched to four hitters. He would get the groundout to end the eighth, then strike out the side to save the ninth.
