The Cougars offense kept it going again, this time with ten runs on eleven hits. This was their eighth straight win to open the season. This time it was 10-3 over the Peoria Chiefs.
Corey Brown had a homer and a double, he would drive in three runs, and score two more. Todd Johnson got on base twice, including hitting a homer.
The first run of the game came in the first inning. With one out, Matt Ray singled to center. Brown followed with a double to the right field wall to get Ray to third. Greg Dowling would hit a fly to center, it would be deep enough for Ray to score and Brown to get to third. Michael Lissman then struck out to end the inning.
Peoria answered in their half of the first inning to tie the game off of Cougar starter Travis Banwart. With two outs, Marwin Gonzalez singled to right. Josh Donaldson then doubled to the left center field wall to score Gonzalez. He would move to third on a wild pitch. Banwart would then be able to get Marquez Smith to strike out to end the inning.
Banwart pitched well, he went five innings, yes he gave up seven hits, but left three of those hits on base, and another one was out on a fielder's choice. He didn't walk anyone and struck out four Chiefs. Scott Deal and Josae Fragoso also pitched well in a combined four innings they gave up three hits and struck out five.
The big explosion for the Cougars came in the fourth inning when they scored seven runs and had eleven come up to the plate. Greg Dowling led it off with a walk, Michael Lissman would single to left. Todd Johnson then walked to load the bases with nobody out. The scariest moment of the game was when Jake Smith was then hit by a pitch. In the helmet, he would be taken out of the game, and word later in the game was that he would be ok. The hit by pitch brought in Dowling. Shane Keough pitch ran for Smith. Christian Vitters followed with a single to center to score Lissman. Walter Correa hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Johnson. One out later, Matt Ray would reach on an error by the first baseman. Keough scored on the play and Vitters went to second. Corey Brown hit a homer to clear the bases. After that the Chiefs brought in another pitcher. Hung-Wen Chen relieved Alberto Cabrera. Dowling reached on an error by the second baseman. Lissman would ground into a force out at second to end the inning.
Josh Donaldson led off the fourth inning for the Chiefs with a double to the centerfield wall. One out later, Blake Lalli doubled down the left field line to score Donaldson. Banwart would then get Jovan Rosa to ground one back to him and he would get Lalli out at second after a rundown. The Chiefs fifth inning was led off by Cliff Andersen who would double to left. One out later, Nate Samson singled to right to score Andersen. Samson then moved to second on a wild pitch. Banwart would then be able to get Gonzalez and Donaldson to ground out for the final two outs of the inning.
Kane County added a single run in the both the sixth and the ninth innings. In the sixth inning with two outs, Brown walked, then Dowling singled to right. Lissman singled to center to score Brown. In the ninth inning, Todd Johnson hit a one out homer to end the scoring for the game.
The only other opportunities the Cougars had were in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh Keough led off with a single to left. One out later, Correa would reach on a fielder's choice with Keough being out at second. In the eighth inning, Ray would lead off with a walk. One out later, Dowling hit into the inning ending double play.
Travis Banwart had to overcome some hits in the game. In the third inning with one out, Drew Rundle doubled down the left field line, then he stole second. Banwart would then be able to get Samson and Gonzalez to ground out to end the inning.
In the seventh inning, Scott Deal gave up a one out double to right to Cliff Andersen. Scott would get Rundle to pop out and Samson on strikes to get out of it.
