17 innings in game two of a double header, after playing seven innigs in the first game. That is one long, cold day into night in Peoria for the Cougars. Hey at least they won the game to get to 10-0 on the season.
The Cougar bullpen pitched very well, Justin Friend, Branden Dewing, Shane Keough and Leonardo Espinal pitched shutout ball for eleven innings. Combine that with the fact that starter Jamie Richmond was scoreless in his last three innings, that is 14 innings of shutout ball for the Cougar pitchers. In those 14 innings they would give up three hits and nine walks. The deffense helped with two double plays in that time period.
Peoria scored in their first inning. With two outs, Marquez Smith doubled to right. Josh Donaldson then walked. Blake Lalli would single to short. A throwing error by Walter Correa would allow Smith and Donaldson to score. Lalli got to second. Jovan Rosa singled to center to bring home Lalli.
The Cougars scored twice in the third inning. Christian Vitters led it off by reaching on an error by the shortstop. Jonathan Johnston then doubled to right. Matt Ray would single to left to bring home Vitters. Corey Brown followed with a single to right to score Johnston. The inning would end after a strike out and a fly out.
Peoria got the lead right back in the bottom of the inning with a run. With one out, Josh Donaldson bunted one back to the pitcher for a single, then Jamie Richmond made an error on the throw, allowing Donaldson to get to second. Blake Lalli doubled to right to score Donaldson. The inning would end when Todd Johnson threw out Lalli at home after a Kyler Burke single.
Kane County tied the game at four in the fourth inning. Shane Keough would lead off by reaching on an error by the first baseman. Vitters then singled to left. Two outs later, Ray doubled to right to bring home both Keough and Vitters.
That is the way the game would stay for the next 13 innings. Both teams had some chances in that time. The Cougars got a leadoff single in the fifth by Dowling, but a caught stealing erased that. In the ninth Vitters would leadoff with a single. A fielder's choice and a caught stealing later, no runners would be on.
A double play would take care of a one out walk in the tenth. In the 13th, Brown singled to right, Dowling then hit into a double play. In the 15th inning with one out, Johnston singled to center. One out later, Brown walked. Both runners moved up on a balk. Dowling would ground out to end the inning.
For Peoria, they also had chances. In the fifth inning, Jonathan Mota led off with a walk. Smith then grounded into a double play. Another double play in the seventh took care of a one out walk. In the eighth inning with two outs, both Blake Lalli and Jovan Rosa walked. Burke followed with a grounder to first to end the inning.
Cliff Andersen led off the ninth by reaching on an error by the second baseman. Nate Samson bunted him over to second. A strike out and a ground out later the inning was over. In the eleventh, Rosa led off with a single to left. Two fielder's choices and a pop out the inning was over.
Mota walked with one out in the 12th. Smith then singled to right. First and second one out. Donaldson then popped out to first, and Dylan Johnston grounded out to first. In the 14th, with one out, Rundle and Mota walked. A balk moved the runners into scoring position. Smith would fly to center. Donaldson then grounded out to short.
Finally in the 17th inning, after four and a half hours of baseball in this game the Cougars would get two runs. Vitters led off by singling to left. Correa then reached on an error by the shortstop. Vitters went to third. Johnston hit a sacrifice fly to left to allow Vitters to score. Ray followed with a single to left to score Correa.
Jonathan Johnston, Matt Ray, and Christian Vitters all had three hits apiece. Matt Ray had four runs batted in.
