Kane County Cougars at Burlington Bees
April 14th, 2000
Community Field, Burlington, Iowa
BEES RUN COUGARS OUT OF BALL PARK
The Burlington Bees who lead the league in both stolen bases and
and attempts, stole five bases and were caught only once. This lead
to the Cougars misplaying balls and being charged with a season-high
five errors. Three of the errors were on attempted pick offs of Bees
runners. That and the fact that the Cougars pitchers,(all but one) walked
a combined seven Bees, while giving up a total of seven hits the entire game.
The Bees took full advantage of the opportunities handed to them.
The Bees were retired in order just twice and those were the two innings
that Joe Sergent pitched. Chad Durham ran circles around the Cougar's
deffense stealing three bases and being caught once. He also walked twice
and singled once.
Nate Robertson took the mound for the Cougars to start things out
Nate went all of four innings probly because of pitch count but, he
gave up 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned, 3 walks, and struck out 2.
Joe Sergent was the one bright spot on the mound going to scoreless
innings while striking out 3. During those innings the Bees did not
get the ball out of the infield, and only hit one ball into the air
which was caught by Niles at short.
The rest of the Cougars pitchers for the game were Gaige Thomas who lasted
five hitters and only got two of them out. Giving up one hit. While two
runs scored. Gaige also walked three hitters and struck out none.
Then there is Hector Henriquez who to his credit came in a tough situation
with bases loaded in the 7th inning and got the final out. Then the next
inning he gave up two runs of his own on two hits.
Offensiley one of the bright spots is the consectitive game walk streak of
Kevin Hooper who now has walked in every singled game the Cougars have
played. Chip Ambres and Dave Callahan lead the way for the Cougars
with two hits apiece. Matt Padgett hit the first homerun for the
Cougars on the new year.
For the Bees, Brian West started and was impressive. Going 7 strong
innings giving up 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 earned, 3 walks and striking out 3.
At one point in the middle of the ball game after the Padgett home run
he retired the next 8 Cougars on 7 ground balls and one fly out to center.
11 out of the 15 outs were on the ground that West recorded and 12 of the
of the 15 were in the infield. Matt Borne, Corwin Malone and Joe Curreri
combined out of the bullpen to go 1.2+2 ip, 1 h, 0 r, 0 er, 1 bb, 3 k.
Offensivley for the Bees Chad Durham ran havoc on the Cougars, he
was on the bases 4 out of 5 times to the plate. Barry Gauch had two hits.
The scoring started in the 3rd inning for the Cougars when Drew Niles
lead the inning off with a walk. Two outs later Matt Padgett blasted one off to left
for the Cougars first homerun of the season.
The Bees struck back in the bottom of the inning when Chad Durham lead
the inning off with a single to left, on the play Matt Padgett couldn't come
up with the ball cleanly so they charge him with an error. J.R. Mounts then singled to right
Durham and Mounts then went on a double steal and were successful the only
only problem was Niles couldn't come up with the ball at second so Morales
got an error when the throw went into centerfield to advance the runners, Durhan would score
and Mounts would get to third. Nilson Teilon then grounded out to Niles at short and on the throw to first
Mounts would score to tie the game.
The Bees justkept on scoring in the 4th when Casey Ragowski was hit by a pitch on his hand/wrist
Then stole second. Spenser Oborn walked. Barry Gauch singled to left to load the bases. Then Robertson
would get the number nine hitter Danny Sandoval to hit into the double play
the only problem was that Ragowski scored and now the Bees were in the lead by a run.
The Bees were held scoreless in the next two innings by great pitching by Joe Sergent. In the 7th with Gaige Thomas on
the mound and one out Chad Durham walked, stole second. J.R. Mounts then walked. On a pickoff attempt at second
Thomas threw the ball into centerfield to allow Durham to score and Mounts to get to second.
Mounts then would be caught stealing at third by Stephen Morales. Nilson Teilon then walked. Ralph Flores
doubled to left to score Teilon.
The last couple of Bees runs would come int he bottom of the eighth with Hector Henriquez on the mound.
Casey Ragowski lead off the inning with a single to right, advanced to second on a wild pitch. One out later.
Barry Gauch doubled to left to score Ragowski. Danny Sandoval then walked. Chad Durham came up and singeld to center
to score Gauch.
