Quad City Swing at Kane County Cougars
April 14th, 2004
Wow!!, if this is going to be what this year is going to be like, i'll take another beer please!. Three times this season already the Cougars have come from behind to win a gam ein their last at bat. Most of the games so far have been close, and the season's not even a week old.
Eddie Kim hit a grand slam homer in the bottom of the ninth to put the Cougars in soole possesion of first place with another victory. Some how the last few games it seems that we are behind in the ninth and it ends up being up to Eddie for the win, he's come through twice already. The ninth started off with a strike out of Chris Tritle. Brian Ingram walked. Luke Appert hit a bouncer up the middle for a single, to put runners at first and second with the one out. David Castillo fought off seven pitches before finally walking to load the bases. The Swing then made a pitching change and brought in Julio DePaula. Ont he fourth pitch to Kim the ball sailed over the right field deck for a Cougars winner!.
If it hadn't been for the eighth inning the Cougars wouldn't have been in a position to come up on the good side of the ledger. With one out David Castillo took the first pitch he saw to left center for a double. Eddie Kim then saw nine pitches before eventually earning a walk. He fouled off four of them. Brian Snyder would single to left to load the bases. Dustin Majewski then reached on a fielder's choice, on the play Castillo would score. Snyder would be out at second. Trevor Brown walked to load the bases.Danny Gibbons would strike out to end the inning.
Unfortunatly the Cougars got in the position they were in because of mental errors on deffense. Especially in the fifth inning, when the Swing scored four runs. Kyle Phillips singled to center. Ben Pattee singled to right. Sam Taylor would struck out looking for the first out. Alex Garcia grounded on to Brian Ingram at short, he would throw the ball to Appert at second. Appert droped the ball as he was looking at the runner coming at him. That error would load the bases. Ryan Spataro then grounded one to Ingram, this time he brought the glove up before he had the ball, on the play Phillips would score and the bases would remain loaded. Denard Span singled to right to score Pattee. On the play the Cougars had a chance to get Garcia in a rundown but nobody coverd third on the play so he was safe. Scott Whitrock struck out for the second out. Matt Moses singled to center to score Garcia. Brock Peterson would end the inning by hitting into a fielder's choice.
Brad Knox started for the Cougars and looked very good untill the fun in the fifth. He retired the first six in a row, three on strike outs. In the third he gave up two singles to lead the inning off. The a fielder's choice for the first out. Another mental error this time by Knox almost cost the Cougars. He had Spataro picked off and in a rundown, but he forgot to cover first base so Spataro got back with out any problem Then two pitches later Spataro would be caught stealing on the back of a strike em out thrown em out double play to end the inning. In all Knox struck out ten Swing hitters and most importantly walked none. After the trouble int he fifth Knox settled down and retired six of the next seven hitters he faced.
The Swing put up there other two runs in the eighth inning against Cougar reliever Brigmer Leon. Matt Moses led off with a single to left. Peterson then hit one onto the deck in left field. Phillips would then walk. Pattee reached on a fielder's choice, with Phillips being out at second. Sam Taylor grounded one to first, and first baseman Trevor Brown made a nice diving stop and throw back to the pitcher to get the out at first. GArcia grounded out to first to end the inning.
The Cougars scored their first two runs in the third inning. With two outs, Chris Tritle doubled down the line to left. Ingram walked. A wild pitch would move the runners along a base. Appert then doubled off the right field wall to drive home both runners.

Well lets see where to begin today there are a lot of things to talk about. First of all I suppose we should give Kim a standing ovation tomorrow before his first at bat, what do you all say?. In the eighth inning Kyle Phillips lost his bat, and it flew intot he stand, right behind the Cougars dugout into the first row. Warren and his beer are both ok, and no not a drop was spilled. Bob and his scorebook are also ok. The best thing about that is a inning latter Phillips had someone bring over a broken bat signed by him for the fans that got hit, that is classy. Oh byt he way Warren's got the record for the bat toss as he threw it back to him from his seat to almost near home plate.
Eddie Kim hitting his homer was such a big hit it was the first time in seven year i've ever asked some one to sign my scorecard for that day. As he was rounding the bases and celebrating like a little kids, all of us fans were doing just the same. Eddie came out for a curtain call after words then ran over to the stands and started to sign autographs for whoever wanted one.
If you want to see the homer please go to Jon Mielke's website at http://www.kccougarfan.com he has it up there
