BECKETT GETS FIRST VICTORY
Josh Beckett the Marlins first pick in the 1999 draft got his first
professional victory today. Just coming off the disabled list after
around six weeks, Josh looked good, despite the fact that he only was
able to get the fastball over basically. Beckett threw 29 pitches in
a two inning stint. He also gave up two hits, one run, which was
unearned, and he struck out two.
Marc Sauer started the game and went four innings, giving up four
hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Joe Sergent came in after Beckett
for three innings of two hit baseball. Joe walked one and struck out
three. Sergent retired the last eigth hitters he faced to end the
game.
Offensivley the Cougars exploded, Francisco Ferrand missed hitting
for the cycle by a triple. Paco finished the game 4 for 5, includeing
scoring three runs. Kelley Washington, Dennis Anderson and Kevin
Hooper all finished with two hits apiece.
For the Bees Josh Stewart started the game and went the first four
innings giving up six hite, three runs, but only two of them were
earned. He also walked three and struck out three. Corwin Malone
lasted one third of an inning, giving up one hit, but also giving up
four runs, all earned, on four walks. Matt Borne came in and tried to
clean up going four and one third innings, six hits, two runs, one
walk, and two strikeouts.
Chad Durham and Barry Gauch both had two hits.
The scoring started in the first for the Cougars when with one out
Francisco Ferrand singled back to the pitcher. Scott Goodman then
walked. Kelley Washington singled to right to score Ferrand.
More for the Cougars in the second when Dennis Anderson singled to
left. Kevin Hooper walked. Anderson would get to third on a passed
ball. Drew Niles then hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Anderson.
The Cougars would put a five spot on the board in the fifth when
with one out Chip Ambres singled to center. Since the game was a
suspended game and Ambres was put on the diabled list and this is
were we begin the game today Kevin Perkins went in a pitch run for
Ambres. On the first pitch of the second part of the game Perkins
would steal second base. Fracnsico Ferrand then doubled to right to
score Perkins. Scott Goodman walked. Kelley Washington also would
walk. One out later, Stephen Morales who was pitch hitting for the
injured Matt Frick who is day to day still with the shoulder injury.
Morales walked with the bases loaded to score Ferrand. Dennis Anderson
was up next and he to walked with the bases loaded this time to bring
in Goodman. Finaly the Bees would make a pitching change and bring in
Matt Borne. Kevin Hooper then singled to left to score both Washington
and Frick.
The Bees would show some life in the bottom of the inning when they
would score thier only run of the ball game when with one out Chad
Durham singled to right, then stole second. J.R. Mounts planted a
sacrifice bunt to get Durham to third. Nilson Teilon would reached on
a Kelley Washington error. Durham would score on the play.
The Cougars were not done in this game when in the sixth Francisco
Ferrnad would hit a home run down the right field line and onto the
deck.
The final run of the ball game was by the Cougars in the seventh
when Dave Callahan walked. One out later Dennis Anderson tripled to
right to score Callahan.
