A great game from both starters, and just enough offense from the Cougars, ment another win. The Cougars would score three runs in the third and another in the eighth to get the 4-0 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks. Steve Kleen drove in three of the four runs, with Jeff Baisley driving in the other. The story of the game though was Trey Shields. He pitched his best game as a Cougar. Trey went seven innings, with six hits and two walks. He struck out seven.

Shields got out of a lead off single in the first with a strike out, a ground out and a fly ball. In the second it was a little bit more difficult. Shields walked, Orlando Mercade to lead things off. Greg Thomson then singled to right. Frank Curreri then hit into a double play. With Mercado on third and two outs, Shields would strike out Steve Mena looking to end the inning.

A lead off walk in the fourth would be erased by a double play. In the fifth inning with one out, Curreri and Mena singled. Ricardo Cruz then lined out to left for the second out. Pedro Ciriaco then flew to center to end the inning.

The seventh inning again would see Shields give up two singled. With one out, Thomson and Curreri singled. Shields then got Mena to swing at strike three. He also got Ricardo Cruz to strike out looking to get out of danger.

Justin Sellers led off the third with a walk, then stole second. Two outs later, Frank Martinez would walk. Baisley then singled to right to score Sellers. The rightfielder Leyson Septimo basically threw the ball into the ground and it allowed Martinez to get to third. Kleen then doubled to left center to score both Martinez and Baisley. Jose Pineda then tapped one to the mound to end the inning.

In the eighth inning with two outs, Baisley would reach on an error. Kleen then doubled to left center to drive home Baisley. Pineda then walked. First and second with two outs. Wilber Perez flew out to right to end the frame. The only other chance the Cougars had to score was the second. With one out, Kleen singled to center then somehow the throw into the infield got away and Kleen would get to second. Pineda then walked. First and second with one out. Perez then struck out. Raul Padron would pop out to short to end the inning.

The Silver Hawks got great pitching also. Eduardo Baeza started for South Bend and went six innings. He gave up four hits and three runs. He walked three and struck out nine. His only thing was somehow the Hawks pitching coach let him throw 104 pitches on a freezing cold day in April.

Out of the bullpen for the second straight game, Dan Fyvie did a nice job, with two shutout innings. He walked one and struck out one.
