The Cougars played a lot better for eight innings than they have in recent days. The first four innings they played very well, breaking out to a 2-0 lead.
In the final four innings the Cougars outscored the Lugnuts 4-0. There was only one problem, Lansing scored seven runs in the fifth inning and would win 7-6, to hand the Cougars their fifth straight loss.
Scott Deal pitched great for the first four innings. What really stood out was the fact that he was able to get two inning ending double plays to get out of trouble. Scott faced one over the minuim through four, giving up two walks and getting two strikeouts.
The Cougar offense also came alive some today, as they would score six runs on 15 hits. Gustavo Rosendo led the way with three hits. Alex Valdez, Greg Dowling, Christian Vitters, and Todd Johnson all had two hits.
Kane County led off the scoring in the first inning. With one out, Valdez blooped a single to left. Matt Sulentic then walked. One out later, Vitters was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Haas Pratt then drew a walk to force in Valdez. Isaac Omura flew to right to end the innig. Another run for the Cougars in the fourth inning. With one out Johnson singled to second. Rosendo then singled to left. One out later, the Lugnuts made a pitching change to bring in Chris Reddout to replace starter Kyle Ginley. Vladez would great the new pitcher with a single to left to score Johnson.
It felt like the roof had caved in during the fifth inning for the Lugnuts. Thankfully there wasnt any clipboards near me. With one out Matt Liuza blooped one near the right field line. Johnson went for the ball and then over ran it. Liuzza would end up with a triple. Jon Jaspe singled to left center to score Liuzza. Matt Lane singled to left. Jon Diaz then walked to load the bases. Scott Campbell doubled to left center to score both Jaspe and Lane. The Cougars then brought in Pat Currin to replace Scott Deal. Yuber Rodriguez hit a liner off of third baseman Valdez's glove and down the left field line to allow both Diaz and Campbell to score. Travis Snider then hit one off of first baseman Greg Dowling's glove and down the right field line to allow Rodriguez to score. Brian Pettway singled to center to score Snider. Currin would then get Sean Shoffit to strike out, and Liuzza to fly out to end the inning. It was the first time this year an opponent had batted around in an inning.
The Cougars answered in the sixth with a run. Johnson led off with a double off the right field wall. One out later, Jermaine Mitchell singled to left to score Johnson. In the seventh inning the Cougars would get within one run of the Lugnuts by scoring three more runs. Dowling led it off with a single to right. Vitters followed with a single to right. One out later, omura doubled to right to score both Dowling and Vitters. One out later, the Lugnuts would bring in Ben Harrison to replace Reddout. Rosendo greated Harrison with a single to left to score Omura. Mitchell would strike out to end the inning.
In the third inning Sulentic led off with a double down the left field line. Dowling and Vitters both struck out. Pratt would then fly to left to strand Sulentic at second. In the fifth inning Dowling led off with a double down the left field line. Vitters then singled to second. Pratt struck out and Omura would hit into an inning ending double play.
The ninth inning the Cougars had a chance to tie the game. With one out, Pratt doubled down the left field line. Mike Massaro went into pitch run for him. Omura then reached on a fielding error by the third baseman. Mike Affronti went into pitch run for him. The Lugnuts then brought in Edward Rodriguez to replace Adrian Martin. Rodriguez struck out Johnson for the second out. Rosendo then walked to load the bases. Mitchell would ground out to short to end the game.
Brandon Dewing did a nice job of getting out of trouble in the seventh inning. Snider led off by reaching on an error. Pettway then flew out to left and Shoffit struck out. Liuzza would then single to left, a passed ball got the runners both into scoring position. Dewing would then get Jaspe to pop out to left to get out of trouble. In the ninth inning, Dewing struck out Lane. Scott Moore then came in and struck out Diaz and got Campbell looking.
The Cougars made a roster move today. Chad Lee who never appeared in a game for the cougars went on the disabled list with a partially torn right rotator cuff. Craig Italiano is back for another tour of duty in Kane County. He is starting the game tomorrow in Lansing.
