Kane County Cougars at Cedar Rapids Kernels
Thursday, April 24th, 2003
New Vetrans Memorial Stadium, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
The Cougars took care of business and remained in first place in the western divison. They are off to their franchise best start after 20 games. Kane County is now 11-1 against teams in the west.
Bill Murphy pitched very well, and would get his second win of the seaosn. He pitched into the seventh inning and only had to be removed because of his pitch count. Bill gave up two hits and one run. He walked two and struck out five. After giving up a run in the first he realy settled down and didnt allow another runner to second base.
Nelson Cruz and Brant Colamarino both had big two out hits that helped propell the Cougars to victory. The funny thing is that the batter before each of them walked and that both of the hits were with two outs.
Cedar Rapids scored first, in the first inning off of Cougars starter Bill Murphy. B.J. Weed lead things off with a single to right. Eric Aybar then singled to right to get Weed to third. Alberto Callaspo then hit a sacrifice fly to right to get Weed home.
The Cougars would score in the fourth with two outs. John Baker walked. Nelson Cruz then hit a homer to left cetner to give the Cougars the lead. In the fifth inning the Cougars scored two more runs with two outs again. J.P.Schmidt beat out a grounder to second. Only problem is that he hurt his left leg in the process and Nick Rogers ran for him. Kory Wayment then walked. Brant Colamarino doubled to left to score both Rogers and Wayment.
One more run for the Cougars in the seventh to give them a three run cushion. With one out, Francis Gomez was hit by a pitch. He then stole both second and third. Gomez then grounded one to third. Gomez beat out the throw home, with Rogers getting on at first. He then stole second. Wayment popped out to center. Colarmarino struck out.
The Kernels did score one more run in the eighth. Ransel Melgarejo singled to right. Matt Brown doubled to left. Justin Hancock then struck out. B.J. Weed also struck out for the second out of the inning. Eric Aybar then singled to right to score Melgarejo.

Notes-Nelson Crus hit his 5th homer of the year. The big news about that is that he is ahead of the pace of the Cougars franchise record of homers, hit by Jason Stokes last year. Stokes hit #3 on 4/24 against Cedar Rapids, and he hit #5 on 4/29 against Beloit. So well see what happends as the year goes by.
