Kane County at Cedar Rapids

April 24th, 2004

Good pitching beats good hitting, at least most of the time. Well this time the Cougars and the Kernels each get four hits, but the Kernels get one more run for the win. Three errors byt he Cougars made a big diffrence in the game and lead to one of the runs being unearned.

Brad Knox started and pitched well, he went seven innings, giving up four hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out ten. He only got into trouble when his deffense left him out to dry. In the secon dhe gave up a one out double, that went no where. A two out walk in the fourth lead to nothing as well for the Kernels.

It was the sixth and the seventh that did the Cougars in today. In the sixth, with one out Quan Cosby would reach on an error by first baseman Eddie Kim. Howard Kendrick then reach on an error by third baseman Brian Snyder. Brandon Wood flew out to center for the second out. On the play Cosby tagged and went to third. Matt Pali then singled to center to score Cosby to tie the score at one. Blake Balkcom grounded out to short to end the inning.

In the seventh it was a couple of one out doubles that did it for the Cougars. Aaron Peel doubled to left. Tommy Duenas then doubled to left to bring home Peel. Two ground outs would end the inning.

Cedar Rapids got a good start from their starter Chris Hunter. He went four innings, he gave up two hits and one run. His only problem was he walked five and struck out five. Aaron Pullin came in for the next four innings and two hit the Cougars, allowing a walk, and getting two strikeouts. Von Stertzback came in and struck out the side in the ninth for the save.

The Cougars scored their only run in the first. Brian Ingram doubled down the right field line. Luke Appert then singled to left. David Castillo grounded into a double play. on the play Ingram would score. Eddie Kim would then walk. Brian Snyder would be caught looking to end the inning.

Kane County had it's chances to score in this game. In the third with one out Ingram and Appert would walk. Castillo then struck out. Kim would ground out to second to end the inning. In the fourth with one out Dustin Majewski and Vasili Spanos both walked. Chris Tritle then struck out. Luis Perez flew to cetner to end that threat. In the sixth Majewski had a one out double to left. Spanos grounded to short, on the play Majewski went to third. Tritle struck out.

J.R. Pickens pitched a solid ninth inning, the only runner was on by an error.
