Ceder Rapid at Kane County
May 2nd, 2001
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
Cougars dominance of Ceder Rapids continues as they won the first game of a three game home series, and won two games in a row.
Mike McNutt started for the Cougars left too many pitches upstairs and paid for it. Giving up a solo homer in the first, and two more runs in the fifth. Mike retired seven Kernels in a row, during the middle of his outing.
The bullpen did it's job, with both Hansel Izquierdo and Steve Sawyer pitching well. Combined they went three and one thirds innings. Giving up four hits and Sawyer walked one. Sawyer in the ninth reminded us of a statement once made by former Cougars closer Hector Almonte who, when asked why he always got into trouble before he closed out a game said, "I do it to make interesting". Well Steve made it interesting in the ninth inning when with a three run lead he allowed Cordell Lindsay to single to left. Then he walked catcher Jared Abruzzo, to allow the tying run to come to the plate. He got out of the inning, by getting Jason Coulie to line a grounder to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Gonzalez then fliped the ball to the pitcher who just beat the runner to the bag to end the game.
The Cougars won against the Kernels for the teneth straight time, dating back to last season. The Cougars are now in a tie with Quad City for first place in the western divison.
Chip Ambres had another good day as he brought the Cougars into the lead in the fourth inning witht a three run homer. Ambres, Gonzalez, and Matt DeMarco all had two hits.
For the Kernels, Al Wawrzkniak started and went into the sixth inning, McNutt and Wawrzkniak faced each other in Ceder Rapids five days ago. Al gave up five hits and four runs. Only one of the runs were earned. He also walked three and struck out four. Julian Harris then came on and pitched one and one thirds innings, givng up one hit, one run. The run was unearned, he also walked two. Bill Stokley closed the game out for the Kernels going the final inning, He gave up three hits and one run, striking out two.
Offensivley for Ceder Rapids Johny Raburn, Cordell Lindsay, Jared Abruzzo, Zack Roper, Mike Campo and Ryan Withey all had two hits.
The scoring started with one out in the top of the first as Tommy Murphy hit a homer down the left field line.
The Cougars then would take the lead for good in the fourth when with one out Miguel Cabrera doubled to center, he would advance to third on a wild pitch. Josh Willingham then walked, would then steal second base. Josh Wilson reached on an error by shortstop Tommy Murphy. On the play Cabrera would score to tie the game. One out later, Ambres hit along one off of the scoreboard in left center to put the Cougars ahead.
The Kernels made it interesting in the fifth when with one out Ryan Withey reached on a bunt single to the pitcher McNutt who just basically fell down when he tried to pick up the ball. Johny Raburn the reached on a bunt single to third. On the play Willingham made a nice play witht he bare hand and from my point of view he was out, the base ump was blind. One out later, on a double steal, catcher Matt Postell bounced the ball into third base and the ball got by Willingham for an error. On the play Withey would score. Cordell Lindsay then doubled to left to score Raburn.
With two outs in the seventh Jim Kavourias walked. Matt DeMarco then singled to right. Cabrera then reached on an error by the shortstop. On the play Kavourias would score.
Adding one more in the eighth when Postell led it off with a single to center. Ambres then singled to right. Ambres and the pitcher Stokley were going at it with Stokley throwing over to first four or five times, before Ambres took off to early trying to steal second and was caught from the throw to second by Stokley. One out later, Gonzalez singled to left to score Postell.

Notes-Kavourias just missed a long one in the third when he hit one to the warning track, this ball was up a very long time. The Cougars deffense is what made this game really get interesting since they just did not make all of the play that they needed to make.
