The Cougars would get behind early, take the lead then lose the game in the bottom of the ninth. They lost 5-4 to the Dayton Dragons.
Dayton scored first in the third inning with two runs. Cody Strait led things off with a single to short, he then stole second. One out later, Kenny Lewis would be hit by a pitch. A double steal would make it runners on second and third with only one out. Paul Janish then lined one to left. Left fielder Nick Blasi tried to dive for the catch by traped it, both Strait and Lewis would score. Cougar starter Derek Tharpe was able to get out of the inning with a double play.
Kane County came back in the fourth inning to take the lead with three runs of their own. Blasi led off with a single to left. Ryan Ruiz then reached on a fielder's choice, with Blasi out at second. One out later, Javier Herrera then doubled to left, Ruiz would get to third. Dragons starter Jon George then balked the runners up, with Ruiz scoring. Raul Padron then hit his first homer of the season, a two run homer to right field.
In the sixth inning the Cougars would add another run to thier lead. With one out, Ruiz would reach on an error by the third baseman. Kevin Melillo then walked. Herrera would reach on an error, this time by the second baseman. With the bases now loaded, Padron hit a sacrifice fly to right to allow Ruiz to score. Both Melillo and Herrera then moved up on a wild pitch. George was able to get a pop out to end the inning.
The Dragons almost came all the way back in only seventh inning. They would score twice, but could've took the lead. With one out, Habilito Hernandez reached on a bunt single to third. Drew Anderson then doubled to left. The Cougars then made a pitching change, bringin in Connor Robertson to replace Tharpe. Strait grounded out to third for the second out, on the play Hernandez scored. Mayker Sandoval then doubled to center to score Anderson. Sandoval tried for a triple and would be gunned down by centerfielder Herrera to end the inning.
In the ninth inning the Dragons would get the one run they needed for the win. With two outs, Anderson singled to short. Strait then doubled into the left centerfield alley off the wall to score Anderson for the win.
In the seventh and the ninth the Cougars had their chances to get ahead. Myron Leslie led off the seventh with a single to center. Tommy Everidge reached on a fielder's choice, with Leslie out at second. Kory Wayment then walked. First and second with one out, up two at that point. Blasi grounded out to third, Wayment and Everidge moved up to second and third with now two outs. Ruiz then flew out to center to end the inning.
In the ninth the Cougars would leave runners on second and third. Chalon Tietje led off the inning with a double to center. Leslie followed with a single to center. It was a bloop, so Tietje couldn't move up. A wild pitch though would move both of them up. Gregorio Petit then pitch hit for Everidge and struck out while trying to get down a bunt. The Dragons then brought in a new pitcher, he would strike out Wayment for the second out. Blasi lined out to left to end the inning and strand the two runners in scoring position.
