Beloit Snappers at Kane County Cougars
May 5th, 2001
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
Well mama always said there'd be days like these. The Cougars bats
just were lost and the culpits were the Snappers pitchers. Kane County
only got four hits today, that is the lowest hit total of the year for the
Cougars.
The Cougars had Brad Haynes starting for them and he pitched ok. Going
five innings, and giving up four hits and one run. The bullpen just did not
do it's job, well. Eudy Lajara pitched two and one thirds innings giving
up two hits and two runs. Randy Messenger then came in and pitched one
and two thirds innings, giving up three hits and two runs. Messenger
gave up the solo homer that gave the Snappers their lead.
Justin Gordon went for the Snappers and lasted five innings. He gave
up two hits and one run. Gordon also walked two and struck out one. Ben
Wallace came in and pitched the final four innings of shut out ball to hold
the Cougars in defeat. He gave up two hits and struck out two.
The Cougars were just overmatched offensivly today as they did not
get a runner to third untill the fifth, and they did not have more than
one runner reach base in an inning all game.
The scoring started in the firtst for the Snappers when Rob Pregnalato
lead off the game with a walk. Elliot Ayala then grounded to third. DeMarco
got the ball and threw to second, umpire Ria Cortesio called him safe,
that is the only call that i've seen her miss in seven games this year.
The throw to first was also late, so the Snappers had two runners on to
lead off the game. Daryl Clark then reached on a fielder's choice, Ayala
was out at second. Pregnalato scored on the play.
The Cougars evened it up in the fifth when with one out Dominic Woody
singled to center. One out later, Woody then stole third base. Chip Ambres
then was hit by a pitch. After that the Snappers pitcher Gordan commited
a balk, that allowed Woody to score.
The Snappers broke open the game in the eighth when Daryl Clark
lead off the inning and pitcher Randy Messenger's outing by blasting a
homer onto the deck in rightfield. One out later Jude Voltz was hit by
a pitch. Eliezer Alfonzo then singled to right. One out later, Hector
Garcia singled to center. The throw from Ambres in center
bounced over the head of catcher Dominic Woody as he was on his knees.
On the throw Voltz would score. Todd West then doubled to center to
score both Alfonzo and Garcia.

Notes-By the way I forgot to say yesterday that Willy Hill has been
taken off the disabled list, and Pat Magness's contract has been sent to
Utica, but from what i've heard he isn't going to even leave town?
