Fort Wayne Wizards at Kane County Cougars
May 6th, 2000

COUGARS WIN CLOSE ONE
The Cougars almost lost this game in the top of the ninth by allowing the umps to get bad call to get into their head and not let them concentrate on the victory at hand.
Clifford Bartosh pitched a good game for the Wizards going the first
four innings and allowing three hits, two runs, no walks, and striking
out four Cougars. Travis Jones then pitched the next inning giving up
three hits, two runs, one walk, and striking out one. Douglass Young
pitched two innings after that and gave up six hits, three runs, no
walks, and striking out two. Todd Shiyuk completed the Wizards pitchers
for the day by going one inning, giving up one hit, one run, one one
strikout.
For the Cougars Terry Byron started and went six innings, giving up five hits, and three runs. Kevin Gordon and Bryan Moore combined to go three innings, giving up five hits, four runs.
Offensivley for Kane County Kevin Hooper and Scott Goodman each hit homers. Goodman, and Luis Ugueto each had three hits. Matt Padgett, and Kevin Perkins each had two hits.
The scoring started in the third for the Wizards when Brian Ward singled to center. One out later Jon Cook hit into a fielder's choice and Ward was out at second. Jason Moore walked. Vince Faison then singled to right to score Cook.
The Cougars would then answer in the bottom of the inning when Kevin Perkins doubled to left. Luis Ugueto then bunted him over to third. Kevin Hooper then smashed a home run that was not your conventional home run. The ball was hit into left-center filed, leftfielder Shawn Garrett and centerfilder Jon Cook collided and the ball droped between them. The bad part of the whole things was that Cook tore his ACL in his ankle and Garrett only broke a knuckle.
The Wizards scored again in the fourth when Troy Schrader tripled to center. Then Jesse Curry grounded out to second to score Schrader.
More for the Cougars in the fifth when Dave Callahan walked. Kevin Perkins then doubled to center. Callahan was out at the plate on the throw for the right fielder. Luis Ugueto then singled to center. On the play home Perkins scored on an error by the short stop. I don't remebr how exactly.
Jesse Curry then lead off the sixth inning for the Wizards with a hoe run onto the deck in left field.
The Cougars would put up a three spot in the sixth when Scott Goodman lead it off with a home run over the right field deck. After a pitching change Matt Firck singled to center. Matt Padgett then singled to right. One out later on a ball hit by Dave Callahan in which the ball hit the lip of the infield and bounce over the second baseman's head for a single to score Frick. Kevin Perkins got Padgett to third with a sacrifice fly. Luis Ugueto then singled to right to score Padgett.
Kane County added one more in the seventh when with one out Scott Goodman doubled to right. One out later Matt Padgett singled to center to score Goodman.
In the eighth Troy Schrader would hit a home run over the scoreboard in center field.
Leading off the Cougars half of the eighth Dave Callahan was hit by a pitch. One out later Luis Ugueto singled to center. The centerfielder Vince Faison bobbled the ball and Callahan scored.
The Wizards would make it interesting in the top of the ninth when with one out Mike Wagner singled to center. Jason Moore then hit a ball to Ugueto and everyone thought he stepped on second base then threw to first to complete the double play but the ump blew the call. The next hitter Vince Faison would then hit a two run home run that just went in front of the scoreboard in centerfield.

Notes-catcher Matt Frick made a nice catch in the seventh inning on a foul pop behind home plate with the sun right in his eyes diving feet first into the wall.
