Kane County Cougars at Wisconsin Timber Rattlers
Tuesday, May 7th, 2002
Fox Cities Stadium, Appleton, Wisconsin
Game One of Two
Dontrelle Willis pitched 11.2 innings of no hit ball in his last
two outing. It's almost like he is on automatic. He went 5.2 innings
today without giving up a hit. When he gave up a couple of hits in the
sixth with two outs, he finished the inning by getting his first strikeout
of the ballgame. Willis was perfect through the first 2.1 innings. Then
he walked Guillermo Martinez. Dontrelle would get the next hitter to
hit into a double play to end the inning. After that he retired the next
five in a row, before giving up a walk. He would get out of that inning
by getting a grounder to short. Willis retired the next three in a row before
giving up a couple of hits. In his first six innings Willis only got two
fly ball outs. Four of those ground ball outs were hit back to the mound. Willis has
pitched 33 innings and givin up 20 hits total this year. This was Dontrelle's first
complete game and first shutout of his career.
The offense came alive today. Charles Frazier got one hit only, but
he scored three times. Frazier walked twice. He also stole two bases. Anthony Brewer
got two hits and a sacrifice bunt. Jason Stokes drove home three runs. Heath Kelly got
two hits, one home run.
In the second inning the Cougars had runners on first and second
with nobody out. Jason Stokes and Michael Tucker both walked. Hunter
Wyant hit a pop up to the first baseman. Dennis Anderson then flied
out to shollow left field for the second out. Heath Kelly then lined
one to the corner in left. It was hit so hard that the runners could
only go up one base. The bases were now loaded with two outs and Rex
Rundgren came up to the plate, he ended up grounding out to the third
baseman to end the inning.
The Cougars had a chance to put even more runs than they did on the
board in the third but mistakes hurt them. Anthony Brewer was on first
after he singled home Frazier. Scott Hicks then lined one to center. The
center fielder Shin-soo Choo caught the ball then threw to first to get
a double play. The reason why he was able to get the double play was
because Brewer was standing on first with no clue were the ball was. Jason
Stokes and Michael Tucker were walked again. Hunter Wyant then poped
out to third to end the inning.
The scoring started in the third for the Cougars. Charles Frazier
singled to center to lead things off. He then stole second base, and
moved along to third on a passed ball by catcher Chris Collins. Anthony Brewer
then singled up the middle to score Frazier.
Charles Frazier led off the fifth inning with a walk. Anthony
Brewer put down a sacrifice bunt to get Frazier to second. Scott Hicks
then grounded one to first, the first baseman let the ball play him and
missed it. Everyone was safe, with Frazier at third. The Rattlers then
made a pitching change. Jeff Perez came on for the Rattlers. Jason Stokes
singled through the hole on the right side to bring home Frazier. Michael
Tucker then flied out to center. Hunter Wyant walked to load the bases. Even though
the Cougars radio anouncer had predicted that Dennis Anderson would hit
a grand slam before he stood into the box, Dennis grounded out to first
to end the inning.
Heath Kelly led off the sixth inning by hitting a homer to left field. Rex Rundgren
then singled to right. . Charle Frazier walked. On a pickoff attempt after
a pitch, catcher Chris Collins threw the ball into right field. Rundgren
would go to third. Frazier then stole second. Anthony Brewer drove home
Rundgren with a single to center. The Rattlers then made a pitching
change to bring in Lanny Patten. Scott Hicks walked. Jason Stokes then
hit a liner to third. The third baseman couldn't handle it, and Stokes
would reach at first. On the play Frazier and Brewer would score. Michael Tucker
grounded out to short. Hunter Wyant hit a sacrifice fly to right, Hicks
would score. On the throw to home from the right fielder the ball got
past the catcher and that would allow Stokes to score.

Notes-It is Cougars radio guy Mike A. 's falt that the no-hitter
was broken since he is the one that implied that there was a no-no in
the works. About ten second after he said that then the Rattlers got a
hit.
Remember to vote for whom you think should've been the Cougars player
and pitcher of the month for the month of April, May's will be up on the 13th
