Kane County Cougars at Peoria Chiefs
May 9th, 2001
Pete Vonachen Stadium, Peoria, Illinios
Jim Kavourias had his bigest day yet, as a Cougars. He hit for the
cycle going four for five with the cycle. He drove home three runs and
hit his tenth homer of the year to lead the Cougars. He is second in the
league to Dayton's, Samone Peters who has eleven. Jim scored four times
and also walked once.
The rest of the Cougars offense also had a good day. Adrian Gonzalez
had three hits, a double and two singles. He also scored three times. Miguel
Cabrera had three hits, two singles and a triple, he also scored twice.
Josh Wilson also had three hits. Wilson hit his first homer of the season,
as grand slam. Matt DeMarco had two hits.
The Cougars are now 23-10 on the season and have won three in a
row. They are still behind the River Bandits. I don't know by how many
or how they are doing since i'm writing this sitting while sitting in a
hotel room in Peoria.
Gus Lopez pitched ok, he went into the seventh inning for the second
time in a row, but this time he did not complete the inning. Lopez gave
up seven hits, which is the most he has given up this year. Gus allowed
five runs but only four of them were earned. Four earned runs are the most
he has given up this year. The good part is that Gus did get his third
straight victory. He retired 9 out of his last 10 hitters he faced
Eudy Lajara pitched one and two thirds innings of no-hit ball. He
also struck out two. This outing was a far cry from what he did his last
two outings. He went 3.2 ip, 6 h, 6 r, 5 er, 0 bb, 4 k. He lowered his
earned run average from 8.03 to 7.23. Steve Sawyer came in for the ninth
inning and gave up two hits. Sawyer has not been scored upon in his last
15 innings pitched. That is since his third outing of the season.
At the beging of the day the Cougars had a couple of people among
the leaders in the league. Kavourias was second of course in the league
in homers. Will Smith is leading the league in runs batted in with 38.
Smith is six ahead of teammate Adrian Gonzalez who is second with 32.
The scoring began in the top of the first when with two outs, Adrian
Gonzalea singled to left. Jim Kavourias then cranked out his tenth homer
of the year to left field.
The Chiefs would chip away in the second when with two outs Albert
Rodgers took Lopez deep to left center field.
In the third the Cougars would get one more when with two outs Gonzalez
doubled to center. Kavourias then hit a double that scored Gonzalez.
The Chiefs would then match them by scoring one in the bottom of
the inning when with two outs, Brian Fatur reached on an error by third
baseman Matt DeMarco. Fatur then stole second. John Gall then singled to
left to score Fatur.
One more for the Cougars in the fourth when Miguel Cabrera then
tripled. The ball would hit off of the wall, then right fielder Mike Floyd
fell over the ball and had to be help off the field. One out later, Dennis
Anderson would hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Cabrera.
More fun in the fifth when Smith lead off the inningwith a single
to left. Gonzalez then reached on an error by second baseman Sandy Santana.
Kavourias then singled to center to score Smith and Gonzalez. Two outs
later Wilson singled to left to score Kavourias. Anderson then doubled
to right to score Wilson. The Chiefs made a pitching change. DeMarco then
reached on another error by Santana, this time it cost them again when
Anderson scored.
The scoring for the frame did not end in the top. The Chiefs put
three on the board in the bottom of the inning when Landon Brandes lead
off the inning with a single to left. Sandy Santana then walked. Chris
Morris who had come in for Floyd, triple to right to score both Brandes
and Santana. One out later John Gall grounded out to short, on the play
Morris would score.
The Cougars then blanked the Chief the rest of the game, but it
got interesting. In the sixth Kavourias hit a triple to center. Josh Willingham
them walked. Cabrera followed with a single to right to score Kavourias.
In the seventh with two outs Chip Ambres reached on an error by
short stop Chase Vosell. Smith walked. Gonzalez then singled to right to
score Ambres.
This is the point when things got interesting in the eighth. Kavourias
lead the inning off with a walk. Willingham then reached on another error
by Santana. It might've been a double play but Santan droped the relay
throw from third, everyone was safe. Cabrera then singled to left to load
the bases. Josh Wilson then hit a grand slam to center to finish the scoring
but the game was just getting interesting. The next hitter was Dennis Anderson
and he gets plunked in the middle of the back, thanksfully he is held back
from going after pitcher Damon Ponce De Leon. The Chiefs then make a pitching
change, bringing in Matt Vrienga and he gets out of the inning.
Plate umpire Ria Corteso had an eventfull day. She threw out of
the game, Brian Fatur in the seventh for arguing balls and strikes. Then
she had to deal with the bean ball.
