The Cougars bats came through and the pitchers pitched just well enough to get a win over the South Bend Silver Hawks.
The offense got 13 hits and scored six runs. Javier Herrera had four hits and reached base five times. Raul Padron had three hits and Myron Leslie also had three hits.
The Cougars started off the game with a run. Nick Blasi led off with a walk. One out later, Kevin Melillo singled to center. One out later, Myron Leslie singled to center to score Blasi.
In the second inning, Chalon Tietje led off with a liner to right. The rightfielder dove for the ball and missed. Tietje ended up with a triple. Herrera then walked. Herrera took off and stole second, the throw went all the way through and Tietje came across home plate for the second Cougars run.
Javier Brito led off the Silver Hawks second inning with a triple off the wall to left center. Carlos Gonzales then singled to right to score Brito. Allen Mottram would reach on a fielder's choice, with Gonzales being out at second. Orlando Mercado singled to center to get Mottram to second. Mark Reynolds would strike out looking for the second out. Travis Gulick popped up foul to first to end the inning.
Brito led off the fourth inning with a single through the left side of the infield. One out later, Mottram doubled down the left field line. Brito would get to third. Mercado then flew out to left, Brito tagged up and would score on the sacrifice.
Three runs for the Cougars in the fifth. With one out, Eddie Kim walked. Leslie followed with a single to right to get Kim to second. Padron hit a liner off of the lip of the infield that bounced over the shortstop. Kim would score on the play. Tietje walked which loaded the bases. Herrera then chopped one over the drawn in infield to score both Leslie and Padron. Kory Wayment would reach on a fielder's choice with Tietje being out at third. Blasi struck out to end the inning.
Augie Murrilo led off the sixth by reaching on an error by shortstop Wayment. Brito then doubled off then left field wall to get Murrilo to third. Gonzales grounded out to second, on the play Murrilo would score. A balk by Cougar starter Derek Tharpe would bring home Brito.

Murrilo would walk, which would load the bases. Brito dumped one in front of centerfielder Herrera for a single. Bonafacio would score, and Herrera would gun Milons out at the plate. Gonzales struck out to end the inning.
The Cougars could've been ahead at this point but a couple of times just couldn't get that much needed hit. In the third inning with two outs. Leslie singled to right, Padron then followed with a single to right. First and second with two outs. Tietje flew out to right.
In the fourth inning, Herrera led off with a single to center, he then stole second. A man on second with nobdoy out. Wayment lined to right. Nick Blasi grounded to second for the second out, Herrera would move up to third on the play. Ryan Ruiz then grounded out to end the inning.
The Cougars would take the lead in the eighth inning. Herrera led off with an infield single to short. Wayment would reach on a bunt single. Wayment was trying to sacrifice him over to second, but neither the catcher or the pitcher could decide between them who would throw Wayment out so neither of the did. Blasi then bunted one back to the pitcher, trying for another sacrifice. The pitcher threw to third to try to get Herrera out, but couldn't, so the bases were now loaded with nobody out. Ruiz flew out to right, on the play Herrera tagged up an scored on the sacrifice. The Hawks then brought in a new pitcher. Todd Stein came in for Josh Perrault. Stein struck out Melillo for the second out. Tommy Everidge then pitch hit for Eddie Kim and drew a walk to reload the bases. Leslie struck out to end the threat.
In the bottom of the inning, the Hawks had a chance to retye the game. Allen Mottram was hit by a pitch. Bradnon Simon came in to run for him. Mercado put down the sacrifice bunt to move Simon to second. Mark Reynolds beat out a grounder to short to put runners on first and third with one out. Cougar reliever Connor Robertson then got Gulick to ground into the inning ending double play.
Kane County could've added an insurance run in the ninth. Raul Padron led off with a single to right. Wes Long went in to pitch run for him. Tietje then grounded into a double play. Herrera would hit a triple to center. Wayment then lined out to left to end the inning.
In the bottom of the inning Scott Drucker came on and got his ninth save. He had no trouble with the top of the Hawks order, getting two strike outs.
