The Cougars would pull the game out in the bottom of the 12th inning, after giving up a three run lead in the late innings. Kane County beat Cedar Rapids 4-3 in 12 innings.
The 12th started off with Walter Correa walking. Shane Keough then poped up to short, the shrotstop missed the ball, and all hands would be safe. Matt Ray would then be able to reach on a bunt single to third to load the bases with nobody out. Greg Dowling then came up and singled to right to score Correa to win the game.
The comeback almost didnt happen, as the Kernels really threatend in the top of the inning. With one out, Brad Hertzler gave up a single to Clay Fuller to center. Ivan Contreras then reached on a fielder's choice with Fuller being out at second, Contreras stole second. Efren Navarro then walked. The Cougars would bring in Scott Deal, he would make an errant pick off attempt which allowed both runners to move up a base with two outs. Jay Brossman then flew to left to end the inning.
For the Cougars the offense came in the second, third and sixth innings. In the second inning, Matt Smith led off with a walk. Jake Smith then singled to short. He would beat the throw, the throw however went wide and both runners advanced a base. Todd Johnson then grounded out to second to score Matt Smith. Larry Cobb then also grounded out to second, to move Jake Smith to third with two outs. Correa would strike out.
In the third inning, Shane Keough led off with a single to right. One out later, Greg Dowling singled to left. Corey Brown would reach on a fielder's choice with Dowling out at second. Matt Smith then singled to left to bring home Keough. With one out in the sixth inning Jake Smith hit a double down the left field line. Todd Johnson then hit one to right, the right fielder slide and missed the ball for a double. Smith ended up on third. Larry Cobb then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Smith.
The Kernels scored their runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. In the seventh inning Julio Perez hit a solo shot to left. The eighth saw Ivan Contreras hit a solo homer to left. With one out in the ninth, Perez would reach on a two base throwing error by third baseman Larry Cobb. A wild pitch by newly brought in reliever Nick Walters got Perez to third. Anel De Los Santos then singled to left to score Perez.
Scott Hodsdon started for the Cougars and pitched well. He went five shutout innings. Scott gave up four hits and struck out four. Of those four strike outs three came in the last four hitters he would face. He did get into trouble in the first inning. Hodsdon hit the first batter of the game. Clay Fuller would then be caught trying to steal second. Contreras followed with a double to left center. Efran Navarro grounded to short to move Contreras to third with two outs. Hodsdon then got Brossman to ground out to end the inning.
Kane County had some chances throughout the game. In the first Dowling had a two out double down the left field line. Brown then flew to left. The eighth inning with two outs, Jake Smith and Todd Johnson both walked. Cobb then hit into a force out at second to end the inning. In the ninth inning, Walter Correa led off with a single to left. Keough then reached on a fielder's choice. Keough basically bunt the ball to hard back toward the pitcher who got the ball and got Correa at second. The inability to get down the bunt almost cost the Cougars in the game. Keough then get caught stealing, the Kernels had a pitch out on, and it had to be a missed sign by Keough as he was in no man's land between first and second. Matt Ray would then pop out to third to end the inning. With one out in the tenth inning Matt Smith walked, Jake Smith then hit into the inning ending doubel play.
