The Cougars deffense almost cost them a shot at coming back in this
game and getting the victory. They had as many runs as they did errors
and this game was not a pretty sight to be seen. The errors contribuated
to two of the runs for the Silver Hawks.
This is not to say that South Bend was errorless, they made three
errors themselves. Their errors led to two of our runs.
The runs that ultimatley decided the game were on Jim Kavourias's
elevnth homer of the year. That was against a pitcher that had just come
in from the bullpen with the game Cougars ahead by one.
Ramon Castillo started for the eighth time this year and he lasted
into the sixth inning, but not much farther. He was yanked after giving
up two hits and a walk. He did allow six hits and three runs. Only one of
the runs were earned. Hansel Izqueirdo then came in with Hawks on first
and third nobody out, and one run already in. Hansel got Robert Hammock
to hit into a double play. After that Craig Ansman grounded out to short
to end the inning, and hold the Hawks to just one run.
Chip Ambres had another three hit game, this seems like hit 50th of
the year but I know it is far less, maybe his tenth. Chip needed only
a homer to get the cycle. He scored two runs and drove home one run.
Adrian Gonzalez had two more hits, two singles. One to drive in a run. At
the start of the day he was second in the league in hitting. Josh WIllingham
also had three hits. Two singles and a double.
The scoring started in the first for the Cougars as, Ambres led off the
game with a single to center. The center fielder misplayed the ball and
Ambres made it to second. Will Smith then singled to center to score Ambres.
Smith would get to second on an earant pickoff throw from pitcher Bill White.
One out later, Kavourias hit into a fielder's choice. Smith was out at third.
Willingham then doubled to left to score Kavourias.
The Hawks answered right back in the bottom of the inning when, with
one out Andy Green would reach on an error by Ambres. Chip just lost the
ball in the sun. Green would end up on second from that play. He then stole
third. On the throw from catcher Dennis Anderson, which went into right field
Green would score.
The Hawks would te the game in the fifth when, Cory Myers led off the inning
by knocking a ball in between Kavourias in right, Wilson at second, and
Gonzalez at first. Victor Hall then would try to get him to second via
the sacrifice bunt. Their was one problem, Castillo feilded the ball then
threw it away. Max Vizcaino then grounded out to short, on the play Myers would
score.
Taking the lead for the first time in the sixth. The Hawks had Andy
Green lead off the inning with a single to left. Jorge Delgado then doubled
to left, off of the wall. Another few feet and the ball would've been out
of the park. On the play Green would score.
The Cougars then took the lead right back in the next inning when with
one out Willy Hill doubled to left. Ambres then doubled to left to score
Hill. The Hawks then made a pitching change, Will Smith was next up and
he would reach on an error by the second baseman. Gonzalez then singled
to right to score Ambres.
In the ninth Gonzalez lead it off with a single to center. South Bend
then made a pitching change, Kavourias was next and he took one out to
left and over the wall.
Brandon Sloan then came in for the ninth and made sure it was interesting.
I think he has the "Almonte syndrome". Craig Ansman led off the inning by doubling
to left. Cory Myers then walked. Hall reached on a fielder's choice, on the play
Myers was out at second. Vizcanio then reached on an infield single, on
the play Ansman would score. JuJu Foreman then reached on another infield single to
load the bases. Sloan then got Green to pop out into foul territoy to Gonzalez.
Delgado then hit one to third, Willingham forced Vizcaino out and the game
was over.
