Three hits and no runs for the Cougars after a week or so where it looked like the offense was maybe coming together a little. Well the Cougars would lose to Cedar Rapids 2-0 tonight in a weird and wet game.
Both starting pitchers were great. Scott Mitchinson pitched seven strong innings for the Cougars, giving up one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out seven. Scott got into trouble in only the one inning that he gave up the run. The run really shouldn't have come across.
For the Kernels Jordan Walden started and went six innings, giving up one hit and one walk. He would strike out six Cougars. The Cougars had one chance off of him. That would be in the fifth inning when Carlos Arrieche would get a two outs double to right center. Walden then got Walter Correa to ground out to end the inning. Walden retired the first seven he faced.
In the fifth inning for the Kernels with two outs, Andrew Romine singled to right. He would then steal second base. He then would be caught off of second base after the fourth pitch of Chris Rosenbaum's at bat. Catcher Matt Smith threw to second to get Romine. The second baseman Matt Ray was late getting over to second to get the throw. The ball went into center. Because as the throw was in the air Romine went back towards second then broke to third before the ball got to second, he would be able to score on the play as the ball went into center. He would've scored anyway as Rosenbaum hit a double to right center. Ivan Contreras then lined to left to end the inning.
The other run the Kernels scored came in the eighth inning. Contreras hit a liner to center. Centerfielder Corey Brown took a bad route to the ball and had it go over his outstreatched glove, and Contreras would end up with a triple. Jeremy Moore then hit a grounder to second. The only problem was the infield was in to get the runner at the plate and keep it a one run game. Moore's grounder went into right field for a run scoring single.
The was a 22 minute delay before the game because it looked like it was going to pour. In the bottom of the seventh inning with two strikes on Corey Brown lightning came and the game was halted for another hour and thirty four minutes. When play resumed Brown struck out on the first pitch back. Arrieche had a double in the fifth and would reach on an error in the third. Walter Correa and Jake Smith had the other hits. A bloop single to center, that the fielder just missed catching.
Cedar Rapids did have one more chance to score. In the ninth they would get two runners on against reliever Leonardo Espinal. Efren Navarro led off with a single to first. One out later, Julio Perez blooped a single to right center. Romine struck out. With Rosenbaum up, catcher Matt Smith would pick off Perez from first to end the inning.
