Jamie Richmond was nearly perfect today. He was perfect through 5 and 2/3 innings. Jamie had a no hitter going through 7 innings and one hitter. In all he went eight one hit innings, and pitched awesomely.
Richmond had the perfect game go away in the sixth when he walked Jerry Gonzalez with two outs, he then got Jeremy Moore on strikes to end the inning. In the seventh with two outs, Gordon Gronkowski reached on an error by shortstop Matt Ray, he then stole second. Richmond would strike out Clay Fuller to end the inning. The most trouble Jamie had in an inning would be the eighth. Angel Castillo led it off by reaching on an error by Richmond. Andrew Romine then singled to left to break up the no hitter. Anel De Los Santos then reached on a fielder's choice with Castillo being out at third. Richmond then got Gonzalez to pop up foul to third and Moore on strikes.
Richmond had a new career high with the eight strikeouts tonight. He has a consecutive scoreless innings streak of 13 and two thirds going. The Cougars havent allowed a run for 20 straight inning since Tuesday. They have also won eight of their last 11 games.
Justin Friend came on for the ninth and didnt allow a run but he did have to get out of trouble. With one out, Gronkowski reached on an error by left fielder Shane Keough, Gronkowski would end up on second. One out later, a wild pitch moved Gronkowski to third. Clay Fuller walked. First and third with two outs and the shutout on the line. Angel Castillo grounded out to third to end the game.
Kane County did have some offense, they scored four runs on seven hits. Todd Johnson led off the second with a bunt single to third, he then stole second. Carlos Arrieche moved him to third with a ground out. Jonathan Johnston then hit a sacrifice fly to shallow left field. Johnson somehow beat the throw home, he is very fast, wow. In the fifth inning, Johnston led off with a single to right, then stole second. A ground out by Matt Ray got him to third. Keough then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Johnston.
The other two runs for the Cougars came in the sixth inning. Greg Dowling led off with a single to right. Corey Brown walked. One out later, the Kernels brought in a new pitcher to replace starter Michael Davitt. Chris Armstrong would come in and walk Johnson to load the bases with only one out. Arrieche then singled to third, Dowling would score. Johnston reached on a fielder's choice with Arrieche being out at second, Brown would score on the play. Johnston then would be picked off of first to end the inning.
There were a couple of other chances the Cougars had to score some runs in the game. In the first inning, Shane Keough led off with a walk. Larry Cobb then was hit by a pitch. Davitt then would strike out both Dowling and Brown and get Jake Smith to ground out to end the inning. In the fourth inning with one out, Johnson singled to center, then stole second. Arrieche lined into a double play, as Johnson would be caught off of second to end the inning. The ninth inning would be the most painfull as the Cougars left the bases loaded. Jake Smith and Johnson both walked. One out later, Johnston walked to load the bases with only one out. Reliever Ismael Carmona then struck out Ray looking and got Keough to fly to left to end the inning.
