The Cougars ran into another hot pitcher today, as the Yankees ran out Ray Clark who pitched a great game. He went eight inning, giving up only four hits and a homer.
Things were looking bad in the the fourth when the Yanks broke the game open by scoring three of thier five runs. The Cougars had their chances to come back in the late innings but could only muster up one run.
Kane County know has lost eight of their last ten and are in danger of losing two series in a row to eastern division teams.
In the fourth the fireworks all started with one out, Matt Carson singled to left. Eric Verbyke then was hit by a pitch on the foot. Rudy Guillen hit a shot over the deck in left to put the game basically away.
Before that the Yanks would score their first run in the third inning. Juan Camacho lead off with a single to right, then stole second base. Omir Santos flied to center. Joaquin Arias then also flied out to center for the second out. Alexander Santa singled to left to bring home Camacho.
The Cougars scored a run in the sixth on a Nick Rogers first pitch home run that just cleared the wall in left for his second homer of the year.
Jared Burton made the start for the Cougars since Shane Komine got promoted to Midland. He lasted four innings, giving up five hits and four runs. Burotn got the first six Yanks out, before Camacho's single in the third.
Nelson Cruz lead off the seventh inning by reaching on an throwing error by shortstop Arias. Cruz would get ot second on the play. Brant Colamarino then lined out to first. Jason Basil then flied out to center for the second out. John Suomi foule dout to left to end the threat.
Battle Creek did add another run in the eighth. With one out Matt Carson singled to left, then went to second on a wild pitch. Verbyke lined out to center for the second out. Guillen singled to right to score Carson to make it a five to one game.
In the ninth inning the Cougars would have their best chance of the night to tie the game up against the Yanks reliever Matt Brumit. Kory Wayment lead off with a bunt single to third. John Baker then singled to center. Nelson Cruz singled to right to load the bases. Brant Colamarino struck out for the first out of the inning. Basil then flied out to right. Wayment tagged up and scored but it was a close play at the plate. The game would end with runners on first and second for the Cougars. John Suomi lined out to left for the final out.
Matt Carson for the Yanks had a big night. He singled three times and scored two runs. Rudy Guillen also had two hits, including a homer. He drove in four of the five Yankees runs.
