Kane County Cougars at Dayton Dragons
Monday, May 21st, 2001
Fifth Third Field, Dayton, Ohio
Brad Haynes started and pitched very well, he went into the sixth
inning and gave up only three hits. He allowed two runs, one of the runs
was a bases loaded walk. He walked four and tied a career high with seven
strikeouts. From the second till the sixth, Haynes allowed one hit and one
walk. In that time he struck out five and retired ten of the twelve
men he faced and the Dragons only had two runners, and left one of them
on base. The other runner was erased by a double play. Brad just fell
apart in the sixth as he gave up one hit, one walk, and hit one Dragon.
Miguel Cabrera had a big day with him getting his second homer of the
season in the first. He also had a run scoring double in the third. He drove
home three runs.
Mike Flannery did a good job in an inning of relief, he got two fly outs
and a pop out. Eudy Lajara got the last out of the seventh inning by getting
David Espinosa to ground out to third. Hansel Izquierdo did one heck of a
good job in one inning of work. Hansel walked the first man he faced. Then
he settled down and struck out the next three batters he faced. Steve Sawyer
had a lot of trouble in what would be one thirds of an inning of work. The
first man he faced reached on an error. Then he gave up a single, he recoverd
from that to get a big strike out of Mike Calitri. Omar Hurtado though
singled off of him, and that sent him to the showers. Brandon Sloan gave up
a single to the first man he faced to allow a run to score. Then he got
pitch hitter Brian Jones to fly to left, even though that resulted in Dayton
getting a run aon a sacrifice fly, he got the out. Randy Ruiz then grounded out
on a wierd play.
Dennis Anderson was the first Cougar this year to be thrown out of a
game as he was tossed in th top of the ninth when after he singled to
center, and got to third when DeMarco walked. He was caught off of second
on a throw from the pitcher, and was called out. He argued with base
ump Scott McClellan.
The scoring started in the top of the first when Chip Ambres led the
games off with a walk. Will Smith then singled to right to get Ambres to
third. Adrian Gonzalez then singled to left to score Ambres. Jim Kavourias
was next and he hit one to third, the third baseman threw to second to force
Gonzalez out. Smith scored on the play. Miguel Cabrera then hit a homer to
left that just made it out.
The Dragons came right back in the bottom of the inning when David
Espinosa lead off the inning with a walk. One out later Randy Ruiz doubled
to right off the wall, to socre Espinosa.
More fun for the Cougars in the thid when Smith lead off the inning
by being plunked in the hip by a pitch. Gonzalez then singled to left.
One out later Cabrera hit a double, that went just passed the third baseman
and into the bullpen. Smith would score on the play. Josh Willingham then
hit a long fly to right, it ended up as a sacrifice fly. Gonzalez would
score on the play.
Haynes would get into trouble again in the sixth when, David Espinosa
lead off the inning with a single to right. Wandel Campana then walked.
One out later, Samone Peters was hit by a pitch. One out later,
Steve Smitherman walked with the bases loaded to allow Espinosa to
score. The Cougars then made a pitching change to bring in Mike
Flannery with the bases still loaded. Flanery then sawed off Marc Sauerz
who poped out to short to leave the bases loaded.
Dayton then made it a game in the bottom of the ninth when Steve Smitherman
lead off the inning by reaching on an error by short stop Miguel Cabrera. Marc Sauerz
then singled right up the middle past pitcher Steve Sawyer. Mike Calitri then struck out.
Omar Hurtado hit one over the hear of Kavourias in right, the Dragons held
the runner, Smitherman at third but the throw got away from DeMarco at
third, they charged Kavourias with an error on the play because they
said that the throw was low, that allowed Smitherman to score. After
that Sawyer was removed and Brandon Sloan came on with runners on first
and second with one out and it was a save situation. David Esponosa then
singled to right to load the bases. The Dragons then pitch hit for Wandel
Campana, Brian Jones then came on and hit a sacrifice fly to left to
score Sauerz. On the play Hurtado went to third. Randy Ruiz then hit a
ball that swibbled off the bat or foot of Randy Ruiz down the thrid base
line. Catcher Dominic Woody got to the ball and thre Ruiz out. Ruiz didn't
even run down to first since he thought the ball was foul and off of his
foot. Dayton manager Donnie Scott came out and yelled at homeplate ump Ria
Cortesio.
