The Cougars couldnt get much going today untill the ninth, but it was just too little, too late. They would score two of their three runs in the ninth, the only problem is that Fort Wayne scored nine runs in eight innings and took the final game of the series.
The Wizards were just able to put the hits together when they needed to, and took advantage of the Cougars pitchers in scoring eight runs. In the third inning the Wizards would score four runs. Brian Fryer led off with a single to right. Baudilio Figueroa then singled to left. Chris Koklhorst would single to left to load the bases with nobody out. Brett Dowdy then grounded out to first, Fryer would score the first run of the game. Peter Ciofrone then doubled to right to score Figueroa and Koklhorst. Colt Morton followed with a single to left to score Ciofrone. Cougar starter Michael Rogers then settled down and struck out, Tom Vincent. He would get Sean Kazmar to ground out to end the inning.
Fort Wayne then scored three times in the sixth. Kazmar led off with a walk. Ruben Mora then grounded into a double play. With two outs, Fryer singled. Figueroa then hit a homer to put the Wizards up six runs. Kolkhorst then walked, and would be balked to second. Reliever Clay Tichota, made a move to first to try to pick off the runner, only one problem, first baseman Eddie Kim wasnt any where near the bag. Dowdy then tripled to right to score Kolkhorst. Ciofrone would line out to second to finish things off.
Two more runs by the Wizards in the eighth inning. Mora would reach on a called third strike wild pitch to led things off. Fryer followed that up with a double to left. Reliever Robert Semerano then struck out Figueroa for the first out. Koklhorst would ground out to second for the second out, Mora came home on the play. Dowdy then singled to right to score Fryer.
The Cougars did have a little bit of offense in the game, not much but a little. Myron Leslie led off the seventh with a double to left. One out later, Chalon Tietje singled to right. Chris Tritle then singled up the middle to score Leslie to break up the shutout. Travis Chapman hit into an inning ending double play.
In the ninth an error would lead to the Cougars scoring two runs. Raul Padron hit one to first, the first baseman tried to shovel it over to the pitcher, but he couldn't keep his foot on the bag, and was charged with an error. Two outs later, Teitje would hit his first homer of the year. This one hit off of the foul pole in left.
The offense did have some chances to come alive int he game, but the good Wizard pitching held then in check. In the first inning with one out, Ryan Ruiz walked. Kevin Melillo then reached on a fielder's choice, with Ruiz being out at second. Padron singled to right, Melillo would get to third. Leslie grounded out to short to end the inning. In the third inning, Chapman led off with a single to right. Nick Blasi then grounded one to short. The shortstop tried to get the force at second and threw the ball into right field. On the error, Chapman went to third and Blasi would get to second. The Wizards starter Mike Ekstrom then struck out, Ruiz, Melillo and Padron to get out of the inning.
Between the error in the third and the double to led off the seventh the Wizards retired 12 Cougars in a row. Five of them on ground outs, two in the air, and five on strikes. The Wizards had their leadoff guy get on base six out of eight innings. Two of those times he would score. In the second inning, Colt Morton led off with a single to third. A lineout, a foul pop out and a pop out to center later the inning was over and Morton didnt even have to move off of first.
The fourth inning started with Mora singling to center. Fryer then grounded out to second, Mora moved to second. Figueroa would then strike out. After two pitches to Kolkhorst the rains came. After forty-five minutes the game restarted. Clay Tichota took over for Rogers. Tichota had to throw two pitches to get out of the inning. Koklhorst would strike out to end the inning.
In the fifth inning, Dowdy led off with a single to left. Ciofrone would then ground into a double play. Morton then walked. Vincent would hit into the force play at second to end the inning.
