If you dig yourself too big a hole you can't always climb all the way out. The Cougars got behind, 7-0 before the fourth inning, after the Caps scored three in the first and four in the third.
The Cougars offense would come out of seemlingly knowhere, they had only three hits before the seventh inning. After that they started to score some runs and somehow made a game of it by the end.
All together in the game there would be 21 runs, 26 hits. Amazingly only one error. Ten of those runs came in the last three innings.
Brooks Colvin led off the first inning off of Cougars starter Ryan Ford, with a single down the third base line just past Myron Leslie. Nick McIntyre nubbed one in front of the pitchers mound. Neither Ford nor catcher Raul Padron could decide who would take it. Runners would be on first and second with nobody out. Ford then got Jeff Frazier to line out to left. Wilkin Ramirez struck out. Brent Dlugach would hit one down to third. Leslie bobbled the ball and would be charged with an error. The bases loaded with two outs, Ford walked Luis Sabino to force in Colvin. Josh Lee then singled to left to score McIntyre. Dusty Ryan then walked with the bases loaded to force in Dlugach. Ford got Justin Justice to line to center to thankfully get out of the inning.
West Michigan fans would have more fun in the third inning when they scored four more runs. Ramirez led off with a single back to the mound. Dlugach grounded out, on the play Ramirez would get to second. He got to third on a steal. Sabino singled to center to drive home Ramirez. Lee walked, to put runners on first and second with one out. Ryan singled to right to load the bases. A wild pitch would move all the runners up a base, with Sabino scoring. Justice followed with a double to right to score both Lee and Ryan. Ryan Ford then settled down a little, and got two ground out to short to end the inning.
Ryan Ford didnt have a good game, that said, he did a nice job in the fourth inning of getting out of a big jam. Frazier led off with a single to center. Ramirez then singled to left. Dlugach singled to right to load the bases with nobody out. Ford then struck out both Sabino and Lee. He would get Ryan to ground out to short to wiggle out of the jam.
The Whitecaps scored another couple runs in the fifth inning. Justice hit a led off shot to center field. One out later, McIntyre walked. Frazier would then double to center to score McIntyre. Another run in the sixth for the Caps. Sabino led off with a single to second. Lee would then follow with a walk. Ryan reached on a fielder's choice, with Lee being out at second, and Sabino getting to third. Justice then followed with another fielder's choice, with Ryan being out at second, and this time Sabino scoring.
Kane County was no hit untill Eddie Kim led off the third inning with a single to right, he would be stranded at first. The Cougars did score thier first run in the fifth inning, to make it 10-1. Leslie led off with a double to right, he would get to third on a wild pitch. One out later, Kim hit a sacrifice fly to center, to allow Leslie to score.
Bringin the score a little bit closer in the seventh inning, the Cougars would score twice more. With one out, Leslie walked. Jose Pineda then was caught looking for the second out. Kim doubled to center, to get Leslie to third. Tommy Everidge then doubled to left to score both Leslie and Kim.
The Cougars big inning would come in the eighth inning, when they scored five runs. Kevin Melillo led it off with a walk. Kory wayment followed with another walk. Javier Herrera doubled to left to score Melillo to make it a six run game. Raul Padron singled to center to score Wayment. Leslie singled to right to score Herrera. Pineda singled to right to load the bases. West Michigan made a pitching change, Kim grouned out to first. On the play Padron scored. Everidge followed with a sacrifce fly to center, on the play Leslie would score. Nick Blasi grounded out to end the inning.
The score was 10-8 Whitecaps, going into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Caps would score a run in the inning to take a three runs lead. Sabino led off with a walk, then stole second. Lee flew to left, Sabino tagged up and went to third. Dusty Ryan singled to short, Wayment knocked the ball down. On the play Sabino would score.
Kane County scored two in the ninth to make it the one run game. Melillo led off with a single to left. One out later, Herrera hit a homer to right. Padron took one to the warning track in center for the second out. Leslie singled to left. Pineda would strike out, after fouling off a few pitches and seeing nine pitches in his at bat, to end the game.
Marcus McBeth made his professional debut on the mound today. He would pitch the seventh inning. Marcus gave up a walk, and got a strikeout.
