The offense came to life for two innings, with three runs each. After that they had their chances but just couldn't get the runners across. They would hold on for a 6-4 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
The first run of the game was by Wisconsin in the third inning. With two outs, Maximo Mendez singled to left. Juan Diaz then hit a double off the center field wall to bring Mendez in to score.
Kane County would then come up with three runs of their own in the fourth inning. Larry Cobb led it off with a single to left. Justin Frash then walked, and Dusty Napoleon was hit by a pitch to load the bases. One out later, Michael Richard grounded one off the pitcher. He got the ball and threw Richard out at first. Cobb would score on the play. Shane Keough then blooped a double down the right field line to score both Frash and Napoleon.
Wisconsin did come back to get within one run in the fifth inning. With one out, Calvin Beamon singled up the middle. One out later, Mendez triples off the right center field wall to score Beamon.
The Cougars came back again, this time with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Danny Hamblin led off with a walk. Corey Brown then was hit by a pitch. Rattlers pitching coach then paid a visit to the mound, to bait the ump. The ump came out to break up the meeting, and Jaime Navarro got into a heated argument, that would eventually lead to him being tossed. Larry Cobb then reached on a fielder's choice. Brown would be out at second. Frash followed with a single to right to score Hamblin. The Timber Rattlers then made a pitching change. The new pitcher would throw a wild pitch to move the runners up, Cobb scored and Frash went to third. Napoleon then walked. One out later, another wild pitch, this time Frash scored.
Wisconsin made it interesting with two runs in the seventh inning. With two outs, Israel Nunez doubled down the left field line. Mendez then doubled to right to score Nunez. Juan Diaz singled to left to score Mendez. Diaz would be out trying to get to second to end the inning.
Things would get rather interesting later. In the eighth inning the Rattlers would have the go ahead run at the plate with one out. Gavin Dickey singled to left with one out, he would get to second on a wild pitch. Joe DUnigan then singled to right, Dickey went to third. After that, Dunigan took off for second. Cougars catcher Napoleon tried to throw the ball to third. The ball either slipped out of his hand and went straight into the dirt or there was batters interference. I could not tell which there was. Cougar manager Aaron Nieckula came out to argue batters interference but to no advail, Dunigan got credit for a steal of second. Reliever Chad Kerfoot would then strike out Ron Garth for the second out. Nuke then pulled Kerfoot and brought in Nick Walters. Denny Almonte hit a liner to the center field wall for the third out. I thought the ball was out of here off the bat.
The game should not have been so close. In the second inning the Cougars blew a bases loaded chance. With one out, Corey Brown singled to first. One out later, Frash singled to center and Napoleon walked to load the bases. Adam Klein then grounded out to second to finish the inning. The second baseman made a nice play to get to the ball.
In the third inning, Michael Richard led off by reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman. He then stole second, Wow he is fast. Keough grounded out to second to move Richard to third. One out later, Hamblin walked. Brown would fly to center to end the inning.
For the Cougars, Justin Frash really did a good job, he had two hits, scored two runs, and drove home a run. He got on base three of the four times he was up. The offensive star was Maximo Mendez, he was a homer short of the cyle. He had a single in the third, a triple in the fifth and a double in the seventh.
Jamie Richmond started for the Cougars, he went seven innings and pitched ok. He gave up four runs on nine hits. Jamie did not walk anyone and struck out five. The thing about those strike outs, they came as the three outs in the fifth. To lead off the sixth, and to lead off the seventh. By the time he struck out his first Rattler he had already thrown 47 pitches. He threw 89 on the day. Chad Kerfoot came in and gave up two hits, but got two strikeouts. He was lights out on the first and fourth batters he faced. The second and third got hits off of him. Nick Walters, was good. To finish up the eighth he almost gave up the homer. In the ninth he struck out the side, getting Mendez to end the game.
