The Cougars outscored the Wizards 11-2 in eight innings of play. unfortunatly they playing the top of the sixth inning and it counts. The Wizards scored eleven runs before there was one out. It was ugly and very frustrating to sit through. The Cougars were ahead 8-1 after five innings. The Cougars were able to score three runs after the Wizards scored their eleven and they had a chance in the bottom of the ninth to get within one run of the Wizards.
The Wizards opened the scoring in the first inning with a run but could've had more. With one out, Brett Dowdy singled to center, he then stole second base. Peter Ciofrone walked to put runners on first and second with only one out. Matt Lauderdale then hit a double down the left field line to score Dowdy, and get Ciofrone to third. Cougar starter Michael Rogers then got Tom Vincent to strike out, and Lachlan Dale to line to center to end the inning.
The Cougars would tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Kevin Melillo hit a leadoff homer down the right field line. One out later, Javier Hererra hit one to the warning track in center. Raul Padron singled to center. Myron Leslie then walked. Runners on first and second with two outs. jose Pineda struck out.
Kane County scored three times in the third inning. Melillo led off with a walk. Ryan Ruiz then singled to left. Javier Herrera then doubled into the right field corner to score Melillo. One out later, Leslie doubled to left to score both Ruiz and Herrera. Pineda and Nick Blasi would both groundout, which ended the inning.
Four more runs for the Cougars in the fourth inning. With one out, Travis Chapman was hit by a pitch. Melillo then singled to right. Ruiz walked to load the bases. One out later, Padron hit a grand slam to right center.
The world caved in on the Cougars in the sixth inning. Rogers started the inning, and was greated by Ciofrone who singled to right. Matt Lauderdale then singled to left. Tom Vincent followed with an infield single to second to load the bases. Rogers walked Dale to force in Ciofrone. Cougar manager Dave Joppie then brought in the Cougars newest pitcher Joe Scott to make his proffesional debut, with the bases loaded and nobody out with a six run lead.
Scott on the first pitch he threw to Sean Kazmar saw the ball go to right for a double. Both Lauderdale and Vincent scored. Matt Bush then walked to reload the bases. Yordanny Ramirez then doubled to center, Herrera looked like he took the wrong route to the ball and it went over his head. All three runners would score. Chris Kolkhorst walked. Brett Dowdy would single to center to reload the bases. Ciofrone would reach on an error by second baseman Melillo. On the play he made a nice stop behind second, and tried to flip it from his gove to Ruiz for the force. The ball would go over Ruiz's head. Ramirez and Kolkhorst scored. Lauderdale then tripled to center to score both Dowdy and Ciofrone. The Cougars would then try to keep all there fans from going crazy, they brought in reliever J.R. Pickens to replace Scott. Pickens got Vincent to ground out for the first out, to a standing ovation. Dale then hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Lauderdale. Kazmar popped out to first to finally and thankfully end the inning.
Fort Wayne added another run in the seventh inning. With one out, Ramirez tripled to right. Pineda misplayed it and overran the ball, he tried to jump to catch it and hurt his ankle a little. Kolkhorst walked. Dowdy then singled to left to score Ramirez. Leslie led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk. Two outs later, Eddie Kim sent one towards the moon, somewhere over the right field fense. Kevin Melillo added a led off homer to right in the eighth inning to close out the scoring.
Michael Rogers pitched really well in the first five innings. He gave up three hits and one run. He retired 14 out of 16 before the disaster.
THe Wizards could've added to thier lead in the ninth inning. Jose Corchado came in to start the inning, and blew Bush and Ramirez away. He would hit Kolkhorst with the first pitch he saw right in the back. Kolkhorst stole second. Dowdy then walked, both runners would move up to second and third on a wild pitc. Corchado settled down and struck out Ciofrone to end the inning.
Joe Scott was brought in after Ryan Ford was placed on the disabled list with left shoulder tendenitis. if all goes well he should pitch again on the 16th. In other news, James Heuser is scheduled to have seen ending elbow surgery on Wednesday.
Scott was a non drafted free agent out of Seton Hall University last year. He was signed last June. He was injured in extended spring training last year, breaking his left (non throwing) wrist.
