Kane County Cougars at Cedar Rapids Kernels
Tuesday, June 25th, 2002
New Vetrans Memorial Stadium, Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Today the Cougars offense was nowhere to be found, the pitching from
starter Phil Akens was ok, but he got no run support and thusly fell to
a record of 1-10. He is tied for the league lead in losses.
The Cougars did get on the board in the first inning, after Charles
Frazier led off the game with a strikeout, Kris Clute walked. Jason Stokes
then doubled to right to score Clute.
The game would stay that way untill the bottom of the third. The only
reason that would happen was because of some good deffense and some good
pitching by Akens. In the first inning, Nick Kimpton singled to short. Tommy
Murphy then grounded out to first to move Kimpton to second. Dallas McPherson then
grounded out to short to move Kimpton to third with two outs. Jeff Mathis
then walked. Mathis was then caught trying to steal second to end the inning.
The Kernels also came close to scoring in the second. With one out Mike
Napoli singled to right. Mike Eylwad singled to left. Jon Cahill then grounded
back to Akens. With runners on second and third and two outs. Mike Eylwad overan
second and was tagged out to end the inning.
They did find home plate in the third. With one out Nick Kimpton singled
to center, then stole second. Tommy Murphy grounded out to first, to move Kimpton
to third. Dallas McPherson then singled to right to score Kimpton.
In the fourth inning the Cougars lost thier best hitter for the game. Jason Stokes
singled to left. Paco Ferrand then popped up to second. Scott Hicks lined to second, the
second baseman then threw to first for the double play. Stokes thought he
was safe and argued, he got tossed. George Arnott came into the game to play first
for the first time this year.
Cedar Rapids took the lead in the bottom of the inning. With one out
Mike Eylwad doubled to right. Jon Cahill then singled to center to score Eylwad.
The bullpen just did not have anything in the tank tonight. In the
seventh inning Mick Gorneault led off with a single to center off of reliever
John Skinner. Nick Kimpton then singled to center. Gorneault would get
to third. Tommy Murphy and Dallas McPherson both struck out. On strike
three to McPherson the ball would get away from Anderson to allow Gorneault to
score. John Mathis walked. Casey Kotchman then single to center to score Kimpton.
In the eighth inning the Kernels just kept on scoring runs. Jon Cahill
singled off of Wes McCrotty. Mick Gorneault the singled to short. On the
play the ball went off of McCrotty's glove. Mick Kimpton then somehow
got a bunt to stay fair, for a single to load the bases. Tommy Murphy lined
one to center. On the play Cahill would tag up and score. Dallas McPherson then
singled to right to score Gorneault. Jeff Mathis would strike out. Casey Kotchman
singled to right to score Kimpton. Mike Napoli would strike out to finally
end the inning.
The Cougars would load the bases in the ninth but wouldn't score.
