Beloit Snappers at Kane County Cougars
Monday, July 9th, 2001
Phillip B. Elfstrom Stadium, Geneva, Illinios
Well the offense comes to the rescue again. The Cougars had one big
inning to seal the victory. Eventhough the game was closer than it should've
been had there actually been umps that knew what they were doing out there.
Brandon Sloan started his second game of the year for the Cougars,
as he went five innings. He got roughed up in the first couple of innings
then settled down nicely.
The bullpen again did a great job as Manuel Esquivia, John Skinner
and Mike Flannery combined to go four innings and give up two hits.
The scoring started in the second inning when Jude Voltz lead things
off with a walked. Jason Belcher also walked. Brian Foster then singled
to left to score Voltz. Hector Garcia then reached on a fielder's choice,
where Sloan got the ball and couldn't make up his mind where to throw it, he finally
threw to third. The only problem was that Belcher was safe. Todd West then
doubled to left to score Belcher and Foster. On the play Garcia was out trying to make
it to third on the doubled. Elloitt Ayala then did the same thing that Garcia did, witht he same result.
The Cougars then put four on the board in the fourth when with one out Josh Wislon
wlaked, then stole second. Will Smith reached on an error by third baseman D.J. Clark.
Josh Willingham reached on an infield single to short, on the play Wilson would
score. Jim Kavourias then doubled to left to score Smith. One out later
Paco Ferrand doubled to left to score both Willingham and Kavourias.
The Snappers would tie the game in the next half inning when with one
out Hector Garcia singled to center. Now came the fireworks. Todd West hit
a grounder in between the first baseman and the second baseman. The ball
from what everyone in the stands says and I guess what the Cougars saw hit
Garcia while he was going by. The ball to one huge hop after it hit him.
The base ump Billy Parker said it hit a rock or the sprinkler. Well the sprinkler
is located behing the pitcher's mound so it couldn't have been that and
that infield is one of the best I have seen, so I highly doubt that it hit
anything but Garcia. Well Cougars manager Russ Morman went bullistic and
was tossed to a great applause by many of the fans. The Snappers now had
runners at first and second with one out. Elliott Ayala then reached on an
infield single to second. The run batted in goes to Parker. Garcia would score.
The Cougars would get the run back in the bottom of the inning when
Dennis Anderson lead things off with a walk. He reached second on a wild pitch.
Matt Easterday hit a liner to center, Anderson taged up and made it to third.
He then scored on another wild pitch.
Adding an insurance run in the sixth, the Cougars had Easterday up
with one out, he singled to third. Josh WIlson then singled to short.
Will Smith walked to load the bases. Josh Willingham hit a sacrifice fly to
right to score Easterday.

Notes-Will Smith was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning, it looked like
it was around the knee cap. He hobbled to first, then had to be taken out.
Gustavo Lopez has been called up to Brevard County, there is no word on
