Cougars Shut Down And Out

The pitchers dominated the game today giving up a grand total of six hits during the game. The only problem was that five of those hits were by Battle Cats hitters.

The story of the game is Battle Cats catcher Jon Buck who had to be taken off in an ambulance when on a pitch that was in the dirt. The ball came up and I guess either hit him in the adam's apple of under the chin. First after the pitch he was being attended to by the trainer then he fell to the ground. After they thought the had him ok, he took a couple of steps then colapsed onto the ground again. An ambulance had to be called and from what I heard it was swelling in the throat. I will find out more before the game tomorrow for those concerned.

The pitcher that stood out the most was Derek Stanford who threw a complete game one hitter. Stanford walked only one and struck out ten. To start out the game he retired the first seven, then gave up the only hit of the ball game to the Cougars by Matt DeMarco. After the single Derek retied the next 13 hitters, before he walked Dave Callahan in the eigth inning. Stanford then retired the lasty five Cougars to get the victory.

For the Cougars Josh Beckett started and looked realy good. He isn't raking up the strikeouts like people think he does, but give him time and sooner or later he will. My best guess is probly next year since he is only 20 years old. Beckett pitched six innings giving up only three hits. He also struck out six Cats. After Josh pitched came Bryan Morse who pitched two shutout innings. The only run of the game came against Marc Neubauer who pitched one inning, giving up two hits.

The only runs of the game came in the top of the ninth when with one out Jon Topolski singled to first. Donaldo Mendez then singled to left. Alejandro Vasquez then came up with Cats on first and third with one out and hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Topolski.

Altogehter this is the best played game of the year that I have seen at least the best pitched. Eventhough the Cougars did have tow errors agaisnt them.

Notes-The error on Callahan should have been on Beckett who was late covering the base. Callahan fielded a bad bounce and made a nice play to keep the ball in front of him. The umpires had a problem with some thing on or that Bryan Morse was doing. The radio guy Scott Franske was saying something about his sleeve or but we thought it might be the motion with his front foot in the windup.

Tomorrow should be Jorge Cordova pitching for the Cougars, Jorge is 5-6, 4.01 era on the season.
