The Cougars scored first in the game against the West Michigan Whitecaps, the only problem is the Caps scored three times the next half inning and wouldn't look back. Eventually the Cougars would lose 6-3.

The first run came on a Haas Pratt homer to lead off the second inning. West Michigan then followed with their three runs in the bottom of the inning, with one out Jeramy Laster singled down the left field line. Jordan Newton followed with a double down the left field line to score Laster. One out later, Deik Scram walked. Scott Sizemore then doubled to right to bring home both Newton and Scram.

Kane County did claw away a few more runs in the game though. In the fourth inning with one, Pratt singled to left. Christian Vitters followed with a double down the right field line, Pratt went to third. Matt Smith missed a homer to right but would have to settle for a sacrifice fly to allow Pratt to score. Todd Johnson then singled to second. Runners on first and third, two outs, Ramiro Mendez strikes out.

In the bottom of the eighth the Caps scored their other three runs. Laster led off with a triple to left. Johnson fell down going after the ball, and it got past him. Newton walked. One out later, Derrick Gordan would come on to replace Travis Banwart. Grodan struck out Scram for the second out. He walked Sizemore intentionally to load the bases. Brennan Boesch then singled to center to bring home both Laster and Newton. Ryan Strieby singled to right to bring home Sizemore. Gorkys Hernandez then singled to third. The bases were loaded, with two outs again. Gordan got Santo De Leon to ground out to end the inning.

The Cougars did do something in the ninth inning tonight. Todd Johnson led off with a walk off of the Caps closer Brett Jensen. Then Jensen struck out Mendez looking and Alex Valdez swinging. Mike Massaro singled to left. Mike Affronti then doubled to left to score Johnson. Sean Doolittle then lined one off of Jensen, who picked it up and threw to first to end the game.

Kane County did have a couple of more chances in the game. In the third inning, Mendez led off with a double down the right field line. Valdez then was caught looking. Massaro and Affronti then grounded out to end the inning. In the fifth inning with one out, Massaro reached on a bunt single back towards the mound. A ball got away from the Caps catcher, and Massaro went for second and would be caught. Affronti then singled to left and stole second. Doolittle walked. Pratt was then caught looking to end the inning.

I dont know if this is a bright spot or not, but since he is a former Cougar, i will mention it. Dan Fyvie pitched for West Michigan, he pitched for the Cougars then last three years. He retired the side in order with a strike out the one inning he pitched.

The Cougars pitching staff had to be creative to get out of some jams also. In the first inning starter Jason Fernandez walked Sizemore with one out. Boesch then singled to right. First and second with one out. He would strike out Strieby and get Hernandez to fly out. In the third inning with one out Hernandez would reach on a drop third strike/passed ball on Matt Smith. Santo De Leon then singled to right. The Caps put on a double steal and both were safe, that ment second and third with one out. Fernandez then struck out Laster and got Newton to ground out.

In the fifth inning reliever Travis Banwart came on and with two outs walked Hernandez. De Leon then singled to left. Travis was then able to get Laster on strikes to get out of it.
