The Cougars lost to the Peoria Chiefs 7-4 at Elfstrom Stadium in fron of 8401 fans. Unfortunatly about half or so were Cub fans so they were routing on the Chiefs.
It was 7-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars had a fantastic chance to win the game. Tommy Everidge walked to led things off. Travis Buck then singled up the middle. Jose Pineda then walked to load the bases. Chief pitcher Walt Nolen then got David Castillo to pop out to third for the first out. Peoria then brought in their closer Aldaberto Mendez. Mendez threw his third pitch off of the backstop to allow Everidge to score. He would then walk Ryan Ruiz to reload the bases with only one out. Gregorio Petit then bounced into a game ending double play.
Peoria got out front early with three runs in the third inning. Sam Fuld led off the inning with a homer to right. One out later, Ryan Harvey singled to third. Jesse Schmidt then doubled to leftcenter to score Harvey. One out later, Anthony Granato singled to left to score Schmidt.
The Cougars answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. David Castillo led off with a walk. Ruiz was then hit by a pitch. Petit hit into a double play, with Castillo moving on to third. Cliff Pennington walked. Luis Perez then hit a double to right center to score both Castillo and Pennington.
Ruiz then hit a solo homer in the fifth inning to right center. The Chiefs answered that with Oscar Bernard hitting a solo shot down the right field line, that rightfielder Buck never saw. Peoria scord two more runs in the seventh inning. Fuld led off with a walk. Eric Patterson then tripled to rightcenter to score Fuld. One out later, Schmidt walked. Bo Flowers then reached on a fielder's choice with Schmidt being out at second and Patterson scoring.
Another run for the Chiefs in the eighth inning. Bernard led off with a double to center. Centerfielder Pineda dove for the ball for no reason as it was clearly going to land way in front of him. The ball got past him, and Bernard would get the double. Bernard then was balked to third by reliever Tomas Cabaniel. Cabaniel then struck out both Joe Simokaitis and Luis Rivera. He also then gave up a double down the left field line to Fuld. Bernard would score on the double.
Derek Tharpe came in and pitched a perfect last inning and one thirds. Michael Rogers pitched good. Yes he gave up seven hits in just over five innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Except for the two homers he pitched good.
In the fourth inning Rogers got out of trouble. He walked Simokaitis to lead things off. Rivera then grounded one back to him for the second out. Fuld grounded out to second. Rogers would then strike out Patterson looking to strand Simokaitis at third.
The Cougars again had a few chances. In the second inning, Eddie Kim led off by drawing a walk. Buck then hit into a double play. In the fourth, Buck had a one out double. Pineda hit into a line drive double play. In the sixth inning, Perez led off with a double down the left field line. Myron Leslie then walked. Kim hit into a double play, and Buck struck out.
