Kane County Cougars at Michigan Battle Cats
Sunday, September 1st, 2002
C.O Brown Stadium, Battle Creek, Michigan
The Cougars let a good outing by Phil Akens go by the wasteside, as
they lost 3-2 to Michigan. This loss combined with the win by the Burlington
Bees has offically eliminated the Cougars from playoff contention.
Kane County's season ended in the eighth when the Battle Cats scored
two runs to go ahead by a run. With two outs against Cougars reliever Elvis
DeJesus, Fehlandt Lentini singled to right. Todd Self then walked. Brooks
Conrad doubled off the centerfield wall, on the play both Lentini and Self
would score. The inning would end when Trevor Mote lined to left.
Akens pitched seven innings, he gave up three hits and one run. Phil
walked one and struck out three. Besides the one inning in which they
scored against him, he only got into trouble once. In his last inning, Brooks
Conrad led off with a single to right. Trevor Mote bunted him over to second.
Steve Checksfield walked. Randy Stegall lined out to right for the second
out. Matt Lucas then grounded out to short to end the inning.
The Cats started off the scoring in the fourth off Akens. With one
out Self singled to right, then stole second. Conrad singled to right to
allow Self to score. Mote lined to short for the second out. Checksfield
struck out to end the inning.
The Cougars put two runs on the board in the sixth inning. With one
out Eric Reed singled to center. Kris Clute flew out to right. Michael
Tucker singled to center. Winton Zapey walked to load the bases with two
outs. Angel Molina did it again for the second straight game he had a big
hit with runners on. Molina singled to left to bring home both Reed and
Tucker. Phil Hartig would line out to the pitcher to end the innig.

Notes--On the marque on the front of the bus it read "We'll Tickle

gave me a straight answer?
