Chicago (Emil Rothe) SABR Chapter
June 16, 2007
Meeting Minutes

Date: Saturday June 16, 2007.

Location: National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, 1431 W. Taylor Street, Chicago

Number of Attendees: 18 (3 attending for the first time). Among the new attendees, Amber Buchanan of the Chicago Baseball Museum discussed the progress being made by the not-for-profit organization to secure a physical location on the West Side of Chicago.

Featured Speaker: Chapter Member Judy Testa spoke about her highly-praised bio “Sal Maglie: Baseball’s Demon Barber”. Her presentation focused on Maglie’s stay in the Mexican League in the late nineteen-forties when he transformed from a fringe major leaguer into the pitcher who would earn the nickname “The Barber”. Her excellent talk was very-well received and met with numerous questions.

Tour of Museum: Attendees went on brief tour of the museum to see many relics (jerseys, gloves, equipment, photos, …) from Italian American athletes across a variety of sports disciplines. The relics viewed included the Arizona Diamondbacks 2001 World Series Trophy.

Historical Marker: Chapter member Brian Bernardoni reported on the efforts of “The Way Out in Left Field Society” to install a historical marker at the site of the West Side Grounds – the Cubs home park during their 1906-1910 glory years. Brian reported that the society has raised a sufficient amount of funding, is getting support from well-connected persons in key decision-making positions, is well on the way through the process of getting an Illinois Historical Marker approved, and may be on the verge of having something spectacular put up on the site.

Report of Membership Survey: Richard Smiley passed out copies of his summary of the findings from the February membership survey and highlighted some of the key findings. He noted that the level of response to the survey suggested the number of members of the chapter having an active interest in chapter activities was in the 50 to 55 range, i.e. at least 25 members would need to be present at a meeting to have a quorum.

Next Meeting: A meeting will be scheduled for sometime in late-October/early-November 2007 time period.

Summer Outing: Saturday August 11 2007 at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, home of the Kane County Cougars. In addition to the game between the Cougars and the Peoria Chiefs (a Class A Affiliate of the Cubs),

Minutes prepared by: Richard A. Smiley, June 23, 2007.
