Clinton Lumberkings at Kane County Cougars

The Cougars finally got their opening day, after a two day wait because of rain. So the Cougars and the Clinton Lumberkings get to play two double headers over the weekend to beging their season. The first of those double headers was today.
Kane County dominated the first game, the Cougars opening day or game pitcher was Drew Dickinson. Dickinson should be used to the weather since he played at the University of Illinios last year. pitched perfectly for the first five inngs of his first start in the Midwest League. Dickinson gave up a little bleeder to lead off the sixth to end the perfect game. Overall he pitched into the sixth inning with two outs. Drew walked only one hitter and that was in the sixth, and he struck out eight. Seven of the strikeouts were swinging. He threw 81 pitches and got 56 of them over for strikes.
After he gave up his first hit in the sixth to Randal Shelly which was a single to center. He gave up another single to center to the next hitter Chris Jolie. With the two runners on he then struck out the ninth place hitter Hugo Agustin looking. Then got the leadoff hitter Cameron Coughlan to fly to center. He was pulled because of his pitch count.
The Cougars offense was the other story of the first game. They put up eleven runson eleven hits in only seven innings. Brant Colamarino, John Baker, Brian Stavinsky and Jason Basil all had two hits apiece. Colamariono, Baker, Kirk Nordness, Stavinsky, Basil and Francis Gomez all drove in runs. Nelson Cruz drove in two runs.
They started off their scoring in the second inning with one out. Nordness nubbed one towards third, and since the third baseman had no play on the ballsince it was placed perfectly he got a single. Stavinsky then singled to left-center to get Nordness to second. Cruz walked to load the bases. Basil singled over the infield to right to score Nordness and Stavinsky and get Cruz to third. The rightfielder made an error on the play and Basil moved along to second. Gomez popped up to second for the second out. J.P.Schmidt then struck out to end the inning.
In the next inning the Cougars again would put up a crooked number on the scoreboard. John McCurdy would lead the inning off by reaching on a throwing error by third baseman Randall Shelly. He would get to second on the error. Colamarino then singled to right to get McCurdy to third. Baker doubled to right center to score McCurdy. Nordness then hit a sacrifice fly to right to allow Baker tag up and get to third. Stavinsky singled down the right field line to score Baker. Cruz walked on five pitches. Basil then walked to load the bases. Gomez singled up the middle to score Stavinsky. Basil and Gomez would move up on a wild pitch. Schmidt struck out for the second out. McCurdy then also struck out to end the inning.
By this time it was 8-0. The Kings started Nick Massettwho lasted into the third inning. He gave up six hits and seven runs. Six of those runs were earned. He walked three and struck out one. Massett threw 62 pitches35 for strikes.
After all of that scoring and the end of the perfect game things were just begining to warm up. Or at least we hoped it might warm up to the freezing point. For the Cougars it would settle down a bit, Shawn Kohn would come in to replace Dickinson. He would pitched one and one third innings while striking out one Lumberking. He threw 27 pitches.
On the other hand the Cougars offense didnt settle down exactly. In the fifth inning Cruz would lead off with a single to left. Basil singled to right to get Cruz to second. Gomez then would ground into a fielder's choice with Basil being out at second. Schmidt then walked to load the bases. McCurdy would reach on an error by the centerfielder Juan Senreiso, as he would bump into rightfielder Larry Grayson while trying to field a fly ball. Cruz and Gomez would score. Schmidt would score on a wild pitch. Colamarino then double to right to score McCurdy. Baker walked. Nordness then reach on a fielder's choice with Baker being out at second.
Even though he went 0 for 3 with a walk, J.P.Schmidt did a nice job of leading off. In his first at bat he saw four pitches before grounding out to second. In his second at bat he saw nine pitches before strikingout on a pitch that looked pretty high from my seat. In his third at bat he saw ten pitches before strikingout swingin. On his last at bat he saw 6 pitches before walking. Altogheter thats 29 pitches That is two more pitches than ball thrown by Kings pitcher Massett in his outing. Baker did a nice job with hitting two doubles to help keep the two big innings going.
With the cold or should I say fridgid weather conditions today the Lumberkings made four errors. None of the errors were because of the weather they were all mental errors. The temperature at the beging of the game was 29 degress with a wind.
