What's not to like about the 2004 South Bend SilverHawks so far? Pitching, hitting and defense were excellent Friday night as the Silver Hawks moved to 2-0 in the Midwest League baseball season with a 6-0 victory over Fort Wayne.
Left Matt Chico struck out eight, including six of the first eight batters he faced at Coveleski Stadium. He walked two, the only hit he allowed was a third inning single to Fort Wayne center fielder Brian Wahlbrink.
"I've never pitched before in this kind of weather," said Chico, a California native who pitched a season at the University of Southern California. "It's a different atmosphere. You just have to get used to it. i was able to hit my spots and Miguel Montero called a great game. He gave me a lot of confidence. My fastball inside was effective. Some of the batters had trouble getting around on it."
Chico threw 54 strikes among his 79 pitches, then turned things over to Danny Mosquea who had a walk and three strikeouts in two innings. Aric LeClair and Alex Cremidan added a shutout inning apiece.,br>
Fort Wayne starter Jared Wells also turned in a strong six inning effort, but was hurt by his defense. he had 59 strikes among 82 pitches.
South Bend manager Tony Perezchica wants to make sure his team keeps the good start in perspective. "The season is a marathos, not a sprint "said Perezchica, "We'll ride these good times as long as we can, and when the tough times come around we'll do what is necessary to fix things."
The Hawks played errorless ball to go with some timely hitting, Carlos Gonzalez and Lino Garcia had two hits each.
Augie Murillo's single in the fourth inning, followed by two errors and a hit by Gonzalez gave the Hawks two runs in the fourth. After two were out in the sixth, hits by Alex Frazier and Montero around a wild pitch made it 3-0.
Fort Wayne did not get a runner beyond first base until the ninth when the Wizards loaded the bases on two hits and a hit batter. Cremidan's game ending strikeout of Skip Adams was South Bend's 13th of the night.
