Different uniforms, different lineup, same results.
With his team struggling to find it's way to first base and into the win column, Quad City River Bandits manager Jeff Carter did what he could to mix things up Thursday night.
Hoping to shake a season opening slump at the plate, the River Bandits wore batting practice jerseys and underwent thier first major lineup shakeup of the year.
It didn't matter, Clinton constructed a three run second inning to hand the Bandits a 5-2 setback, the LumberKings fourth straight win, and the Bandits fifth straight loss.
"Right now, we're trying to see who wants to step up and play the game for nine innings." Quad City manager Jeff Carter said, "We're hoping that somebody will step up and play."
The River Bandits (1-6) managed just four hits off a group of three LumberKings pitchers, including just one during a two run seventh inning that cut Clinton's lead to 3-2.
"We're getting good work in early now, and that helps. I see spurts, but that effort is not showing over the course of the whole game." Carter said. "We'll keep mixing it up until we find guys who want to play."
"I just want to see some fire. We can get beat, that doesn't bother me, but I want to see us go down swining. THat's been the most frustrating thing. I don't feel like we're fighting to finish like we need to and that needs to change."
The LumberKings (4-1) provided a lesson in that approach Thursday picking up insurance runs in the seventh and ninth innings after the River Bandits rallied.
Craig Kerner and Clyde Williams provided leadoff doubled to open both innings, part of a strong effort fromt he bottom third of the Clinton batting order.
Six of the LumberKings' eight hits came from the bottom three spots in the lineup, including four of the team's five extra base hits.
That effort included a two run home run by Kerner that followed a run scoring single by Lorvin Louisa in Clinton's three run second inning.
"If we've learned anything about ourselves during the first week of the season, it's that the hits can come from anyplace in the lineup." Kerner said.
"On a lot of teams, the guys at the bottom of the order don't get a lot of hits, but we've been pretty balanced so far. Everybody is doing there part, and that's what making our team work."
Clinton's Donald Levinski set the tone early on the mound, giving up just two hits through six innings, while striking out six and walking just two batters.
Roy Corcoran and Rob Caputo finished off the 10 strikeout performance by combining on three innings of two hit baseball.
"Our pitchers have been doing their jobs, the hitting has been timely, and when we're making plays on defense we've been played ever better." Kerner said. "It's given us the type of start we've wanted."

Dom Ambrosini grounded out to shortstop. Clyde Williams tripled to left, scored when Lorvin Louisa singled to right. Craig Kerner homered to right center, scoring Louisa. Danny Rombley grounded out to third. Greg Thissen doubled to left. Josh Labandeira lined out to third.

Barry Quickstad singled to left, stole second. Jesus Merchan walked. Both advanced on a sacrifice by James Tomlin. Quickstad scored and Merchan took third on a throwing error on the play by catcher David Lutz. Brett Tamburrino grounded out to third, scoring Merchan and moving Tomlin to second. Matt Abram struck out. Cory Agar grounded out to first.

Louisa doubled to right. Kerner reached on an infield single. Louisa was thrown out attempting to steal third. Kerner took second on a wild pitch, stole third, scored n a groundout to second by Rombley. Thissen walked, Labandeira flew out to right.

Williams doubled to right, took third when Louis grounded out to second. Kerner intentionally walked. Rombley grounded out to first scoring Williams and moving Kerner to second. Kerner stole third. Thissen walked. Kerner was caught stealing.
