Dayton Dragons starter Steve Kelly was the beneficiary of a 3 run fifth inning as the Dragons defeated the Lansing Lugnuts, 4-2, Friday night in front of 2,619 at Oldsmobile Park.
Kelly (1-0) gave up one earned run in six innings to pick up his first win while Felix Sanchez (0-1) suffered the one bad inning to earn his first loss. Nate Cotton wroked the final 1 2/3 innings to gain his second save.
William Bergolla went 3 for 5 for the Dragons (3-6) and Noochie Varner smacked a two run triple in the three run fifth inning that did in Lansing (5-4) for the second straight night.
Gary Patchett singled to lead off the fifth inning and scored on Varner's triple. Varner scored on Jesse Gutierrez's sacrifice fly one batter later.

For the second consecutive game, the Lansing Lugnuts were stung by one big Dayton inning.
On Friday, it was the top of the fifth when the Dragons picked up three runs on three hits.
It was enough for Dayton to defeat the home team 4-2 at Oldsmobile Park.
The loss drops Lansing to 5-4 and Dayton improves to 3-6.
"It's tough to give up a lot of runs in one inning and then not come right back with your own runs." Lansing third baseman Corey Slavik said. "We didn't come back with anything."
Lansing pitcher Felix Sanchez pitched four good innings but got into trouble in the fifth.
Sanchez (0-1) allowed three earned runs and seven hits over five innings. "Sanchez threw well and he was a lot better than his last outing." said Lansing manager Julio Garcia, who was tossed from the game in the sixth for arguing a balk call. "We took him out a little early so he could leave on a good note."
With Lansing reliever Emmanuel Ramirez pithcing in the sixth, Dayton's Bryan Prince was given second base when the umpire said Ramirez didn't pause before delivering the pitch.
Garcia appeared to be engaged in a cordial argument but was quickly thrown out. "It was just a little disagreement over a balk call," Garcia said, "Unfortunately with those things the umpire is always right."
Garcia's exit did little to fire up the Lugnuts. They managed just three hits off Dayton starter Steve Kelly (1-0) in six innings.
"He was spotting his fastball well and getting ahead in the count." said Slavik, who was 1 for 4.
Lansing got on the board in the sixth when Ronny Cedeno grounded out to short stop, knocking home Joshua Arteaga.
The Lugnuts pushed another run across in the eighth on an RBI single from J.J. Johnson.
