Dayton Daily News

Dayton Dragons right hander Justin Gillman entered Sunday's game not allowing a run in 11 innings over his first two starts.

That streak was snapped when Lansing scored a run in the bottom of the second inning. But in the fifth inning the wheels came off for Gillman and the Dragons as the Lugnuts scored seven runs on the way to a 9-5 win at Oldsmobile Park.

The loss snapped a three game Dragons winning streak and averted what would have been a sweep of the series. It was also Dayton's first ever loss in April at Lansing.

After Lansing scored in the second, Dayton came back with a run in the third to tie the game at 1-1. In the home half of the fifth, the Lugnuts loaded the bases on a double and two walks, then scored a run to take a 2-1 lead.

Then Lansing blew the game open with back to back two run doubled by Ronny Cedeno and J.J. Johnson. Gilman (0-1) was lifted two batters later in favor of Kyle Stanton, who was greeted by a two run homer by Lugnuts third baseman Corey Slavik to make it 8-1.

Lansing starting pitcher Carmen Pignatiello (2-0) pitched the first six innings, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and nine strike outs. Dayton scored three runs in the seventh on Amaurys Nina's home run and added a solo shot from Jesse Gutierrez in the eighth.

After struggling to score runs the past three games, the Lansing Lugnuts offense broke out on Sunday.

Third baseman Corey Slavik hit a two run homer to break a 1-1 tie during the seven run fifth inning to lead the Lugnuts to a 9-5 victory over Dayton.

With the win, the Lugnuts (6-5) avoided getting swept in the four game series.

"It felt real good to be part of that huge inning," Slavik said, "It was important to get a win in this series."

In the first three games of the series, the Lugnuts had been outscored 12-3.

"We've run into some tough pitching lately and we broke out of that today," Lugnut manager Julio Garcia said, "We had a lot of good hitting with two outs."

A Mike Mallory double and walks to Buck Coats and Lukas McKnight loaded the bases to start the fifth inning.

Mallory then scored on a Ryan Theriot grounder, and two run doubles by Ronny Cedeno adn Brad Bouras broke the game open.

After a pitching change, Slavik's two out blast to right field cleared the bases. It was Slavik's first homer of the season.

The Lugnuts left only three batters stranded after eight hits and four walks for the game.

"It's a big confidence builder when your team goes outs and hits like that," Lansing starting pitcher Carmen Pignatiello said.

"It was big for us to get this win." After striking out the side in the first inning, starting pitcher Carmen Pignatiello (2-0) went on to pitch a solid six innings. He struck out nine batters, while allowing just one earned run on four hits, getting the win for the Lugnuts.

"It's great to get out of the first inning, 1,2,3, and get immediately back in the dugout." Pignatiello said
