After allowing six runs on nine hits in Tuesday's loss to Michigan, South Bend SilverHawks pitcher Edgar Gonzalez was looking to rebound in Sunday's start against West Michigan.
Rebound he did, Gonzalez tossed the second no hitter in franchise history as South Bend blanked the WhiteCaps 5-0, in Midwest League action.
Entering the contest with a 14.73 ERA, Gonzalez became the first South Bend hurler to throw a no hitter since Mike Girouard turned the trick against Appleton on August 22nd, 1988.
The Nuevo Leon, Mexico native struck out 11, including eight in a row at one stage. Gonzalez (1-1) narrowly missed tossing a perfect game. The only WhiteCaps runner to reach base came when Hawks third baseman Mike Lopez committed a sixth inning error.
Following a 1-6 homestand to open the season, the Hawks stand at 4-7 after taking three of four games from the WhiteCaps.
Rich Barrett led the South Bend attack with two hits and two RBIs as the Hawks tallied the only run they would need in the third inning against left hander Chad Petty (2-1).
Bryan Loeb added two hits for the Hawks, who tacked on a pair of insurance runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.
