"Thwack" went catcher Bobby Wilson's glove. The score board flashed a "96".

"Thwack" went catcher Bobby Wilson's glove again. The scoreboard flashed a "97". You think Kevin Jepsen is all the way back from that elbow surgery he had last summer?

The 96 and 97 represented the speed of a couple of Jepsen fastballs in the first inning of last night's 10-3 Cedar Rapids Kernels victory over the Clinton Lumberkings. As that little Jim Carrey clip they play on the Memorial Stadium jumbotron says. "Smokin"

"I turned around one time and it said "96" on the board, and I knew that gun was slow too." said Kernels shortstop Brandon Wood. "You could see from the very first batter that Clinton hitters were behind him. Then when he throws his changeup, they've got no chance."

"He just really overpowered them," added Kernels Manager Bobby Magallanes. "How many times did their left handed hitters hit ballsover to the third lawn section". I wouldn't have been standing there. I would have been standing to the right."

The 19 year old right hander gave up two harmless singles and struck out five. His first inning power pitching display was so impressive a Kernels' front office employee recalibrated the Jugs gun in the pressbox just to make sure the high 90's numbers coming up were real or close to real. They were.

"I'm healthy," said Jepsen, who hit 96 on a couple of pitches in his first start last week, a loss to Peoria. "I felt just as good as I did in my last start. The difference was I was hitting my spots tonight."

The Kernels hit the Taco bell Ten spot offensively for the second time in three nights, pounding out 13 hits to take three of four games from Clinton (4-3).

The assult included a seven run third inning, in which Wood had a grand slam and Aaron Peel a three run home run.

Wood wasn't particularly impressed with his secon career granny, a wind blown ball that landed just fair inside the left field line and just into the picnic pavillion.

"Tonight, you've got a hurricane blowing out and I hit one that's 315 down the line." Wood said. "Then in Provo last year that one was a thin air home run. They weren't special, but they went over."

The Kernels, who turned three double plays in an errorless game, went 5-2 in their season opening seven game homestand and look to continue that momentum with eight straigh road games to Kane County and Clinton.

"If we can throw quality strikes, if we can play catch in the infield, and if we can get quality at bats, we can win 70 to 75 percent of our games this year." said Magallanes. "That's if we can do all those things.

Kernel Knowledge
Kernels outfielder Warner Madrigal will fly to California today to get his injured wrist checked out by team doctors of the parent Anaheim Angels. Madrigla hurt his wrist on a swing in the season opener last week and has not played since.

The Kernels will improvise for uniforms on thier road trup because their visiting gray tops have not arrived yet from the manufacturer. Cedar Rapids will wear its gray road pants with its red batting practice tops for all eight games.
