It took awhile Wednesday night for West Michigan right hander Jason Moates to get used to the pitching mound at Coveleski Stadium.

"Most mounds have a slope to them, but this one is like a table top," said Moates, who once he made the adjustment, mowed down 21 SilverHawks in a row while pitching the WhiteCaps to a 6-4 Midwest League baseball victory.

Kyle Nichols drove in two South Bend runs in the first inning, his single following a double by Jeramy Janz before Scott Hairston was hit by a pitch.

That was all the scoring South Bend could muster off Moates. The Hawks added a pair off a couple of relievers in the bottom of the ninth.,br>
Moates, last spring' 20th round draft choice by Detroit out of Middle Tennessee State University, retired the next 21 batters he faced after Nichols' hit. The streak included Lino Garcia who walked in the third and was the picked off by Moates. Rich Barrett ended the streak with a one out single in the eigth.

"Jason threw the ball extremely well," said West Michigan manager Phil Regan, who threw it well himself to win 98 games and save 92 more for the Tigers, Dodgers and Cubs from 1960 through 1972.

"A.J. Sager out pitching coach, has worked a lot with Moates," added Regan, "He had a good breaking ball, and after the first inning really took charge. he was effective pitching inside and that's a hard thing to teach young pitchers. I think in the first innin and two thirds he had two strikes on about five batters, and didn't put them away."

Moates struck out seven and walked just one. After being drafted, the 22 year old's rookie season was pretty much of a washout. He pitched only two innings at Oneonta in the New York-Penn League.

"I had a pinched nerve, and after that, a strained ligament," said Moates, who in two previous outings this season had allowed 11 hits in 11 inning.

The WhiteCaps 14 hit assault including at least one hit in every inning except the eighth. South Bend starter Jason Bulger was knocked around for eight hits in five innings, but left witha 2-2 tie.

The visitors struck for four runs in the sixth inning against reliever Matt Wilkinson, and inning that included singles by Chris Kolodzey, Alfredo Lugo and Don Kelly before a two run triple from David Mattle was has five hits in the last two games.

Mike Rabelo drove in two runs with three hits.

With Moates gone, South Bend, mustered a threat in the bottom of the ninth when Janz walked and Hairston doubled him home on a blast to the centerfield fence. Bryan Loeb's groundout scored Haiston.
