Jaime Steward and Dustin Griffith combined on a two hit shutout as Cedar Rapids downed the Wisconsin TimberRattlers 5-0, Friday night before a crowd of 2,335 at Fox Cities Stadium.
The Kernels (9-6) got the only run they would need when Ransel Melgarejo led off the game with a homer off losing pitcher Tanner Watson (1-2). Casey Kotchman's RBI double in the fourth made it 2-0 Kernels.
Dallas McPherson added a two run double in the fifth and Jeff Mathis followed with a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
Steward, making his first start of the season, walked five and struck out five in five innings. Griffith (1-0) allowed just one hit over the final four inning for his first save.
