D.J. Houlton sparkled in his first start of the season, pitching Michigan to a 6-1 win over West Michigan at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Houlton starting in place of an injured Cory Doyne, gave up just five hits and the one run in six innings of work to keep his record perfect at 3-0. Relievers Max Tremblay and Greg Powell gave up just one hit over the game's final three innings.
The win was Michigan's eighth in nine road games this season, making the Battle Cats 12-4 overall. West Michigan which handed the Cats two straight losses to start the season, has now lost two in a row to Michigan and dropped to 7-9.
Michigan's Brooks Conrad singled to extend his hitting streak to 14 games, while seven different Battle Cats accounted for Michigan's seven hits. Michigan also took advantage of seven walks issued by WhiteCaps pitchers, as well as a pair of West Michigan errors.
Steve Checksfield gave the Cats a 1-0 lead with his two out RBI triple in the first inning off West Michigan starter and loser Chad Petty, who fell to 2-2.
Michigan got two more runs in the fifth then broke open a 3-1 lead with three more runs during a two out rally in the top of the seventh. Todd Shelf drove home two of the runs with a single.
