The South Bend SilverHawks probably wished Omar Hurtado had stayed on the bench Monday night.
Entering the contest after Amaurys Nina left with an injury in the first inning, the outfielder put the hurt on South Bend smashing a three run homer to help Dayton to a 5-2 victory over the Hawks in Midwest League baseball action.
Hurtado's blast over the centerfield wall in the second inning against South Bend starter Jason Bulger helped erase a 1-0 deficit and led the Dragons to a win in the rubber game of the series.
After connecting for home runs in the previous two contests, Hawks' first baseman Kyle Nichols continued his hot hitting with an RBI single in the first inning to propel South Bend to the early lead.
The Hawks' momentum was short lived, though, as Hurtado connected for his second homer on inning later.
Edwin Encarnacion got into the act in the third by drilling an offfering from Bulger (1-2) to left field to give the Dragons a 5-1 cushion.
That was more than enough for Dayton right hander Brad Salmon, who scattered six hits and fanned five over the seven innings.
Nathan Cotton earned his second save in as many days and fourth overall by retiring the Hawks in order in the ninth inning.
Dustin Vugteveen accounted for South Bend's other tally with an RBI single in the seventh inning.
Bulger allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out seven in six innings.
Nichols and Rich Barrett finished with two hits each for the Hawks.

On Saturday night, Omar Hurtado crashed into the outfield wall making a catch and badly bruised his left forearm.
Monday night, Hurtado crashed the wall again, this time with a three run homer in the second inning to lead the Dragons to a 5-2 victory over the South Bend SilverHawks at Fifth Third Field.
Couple with Edwin Encarnacion's homer in the third, it was the third time this eason the Dragons have hit two homer in a game and thre first time they've won with two homers.
Manager Donnie Scott was thrilled with Hurtado especially since he didn't think he could play.
"I didn't realize he was going to be all right toady," Scott said, "When he hit the wall the other day. I thought he shattered his arm. He didn't, but he sat out Sunday and I didn't think I had him today."
Scott found out when Amaurys Nina was hit on the left elbow leading off in the first and had to leave the game. Scott was going to put Domonique Lewis into the game, but Hurtado bounced off the bench.
"I said, Are you ok?" Scott said, "He said, Yeah. I'm ready to go."
Hurtado pinch ran for Nina and played right field.
His first at bat was in the second with two on and two out, and he made the most of it, pounding a Jason Bulger pitch off the yellow line atop the centerfield fence for a three run homer.
He didn't even know where the ball hit and kept running in full stride around second, even as base umpire Chirs Tiller circled his finer to indicate a home run.
"I didn't see him, because he was behind me," Hurtado said, with the help of teammate J.C. Huguet acting as interpeter, "I thought it hit off the wall".
Encarnacion added a two run homer in the third as the Dragons won for the second straigh day.
It was a good day for the Dragons' starter Brad Salmon, who easily outpitched Bulger, the Arizona Diamondbacks' first round choice, who signing bonus was $936,000. Salmon went seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs. Bulger went six, allowing eight hits and five runs.
Salmon had a tough start, walking two batters and allowing a run scoring hit in the first. He didn't allow another run until the seventh.
"A lot of times my first inning is rought." Salmon said, "But I got out of there and did the best I could."
His best was more than good enough.
