South Bend Tribune

The South Bend SilverHawks went right to the bottom, to come out on top Wednesday afternoon.

Number nine hitter Lino Garcia provided the muscle with two hits and four RBIs, including a three run homer as South Bend rallied for an 8-6 victory against Fort Wayne in Midwest League baseball action.

The centerfielder Garcia helped the Hawks erase a 3-0 deficit in the second inning with his blast to left field. He then provided a huge insurance run with a two out run scoring single in the top of the ninth.

South Bend grabbed the lead at 5-4 in the fourth inning when Mike Lopez singled, stole second, moved to third on an error, and scored on Kyle Nichols' RBI single to center.

Anthoer Fort Wayne miscue led to two more runs in the seventh inning as Mike DiRosa had a run scoring single and Rich Haydel crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

The Wizards made things a little too close for comfort in the eighth as Josh Ervin, belted a two run homer to cut the lead to 7-6.

However Garcia preserved Hawks' right hander Greg Perkin's first win with his ninth inning heroics.

Perkin (1-1) allowed seven hits and fanned 11 batters over five innings, while reliever Corbey Medlin notched a pair of strikeouts in the final frame to earn his third save.

Kevin Brand and Dustin Vugteveen had three hits apiece, while DiRosa and Lopez added two each for the Hawks.
