The Dayton Dragons were looking for a 2002 season high fifth consecutive win and a third straight away from home on Thursday night against the West Michigan WhiteCaps at Fifth Third Ballpark. The Dragons needed two extra innings, but pulled out the 6-4 win in a marathos over the WhiteCaps on Omar Hurtado's two RBI single in the top of the 11th inning.
The Dragons got the early lead for the third straight night when Noochie Varner doubled with two down, stole third, then scored on an error.
Dayton extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third, then West Michigan got on the board in the bottom of the third with a two run frame to cut the Dragons lead to 3-2.
West Michigan got the equalizer in the home half of the fifth. The WhiteCaps took the lead in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from pinch hitter Miguel Peguero.
Dayton tied it in the ninth, setting up extra innings.
Junior Ruiz led off the 11th ining with a walk off WhiteCap pitcher Landon Stockman. Campana's bunt single put Dragons at first and second. After an Encarnacion ground out, Omar Hurtado picked up a two RBI single that scored Ruiz and Campaan and the Dragons led 6-4.
